10. Chapter 9- Secret Lairs And Secret Visitors

Ughh, my head hurts. Where is that awful noise coming from? I get up from my chair and ruffle my sheets and find my phone sandwiched between the sheets.

“Hello?” my voice groggy for not speaking for the past 7 hours or so. I know what you might be thinking. Well, I am at my lab. I built in a very shady place, far away from my house so that no one knows where I go. I have multiple screens here, that give my feeds of my house, a large working bench which has my tools and heavy mechanical stuff, a bed, washroom and a small kitchen. Though it looks like a ruined building from outside, the inside it lavishly decorated by me.

“Sylvy, so glad you could pick my call. Where the hell are you? We haven’t talked in a while.” came my best friend Daphne’s voice, who is living in India now, for some photography task. That girl never travels without a camera and she is pretty good at it.

“You know where I am, Daph. And I know that Brandon told Nathan to tell you to check up on me,” I say, catching right through her ‘hey we haven’t talked for a while’ act even though we did day before yesterday and I told her everything and where I am, “Oh and hi Brandy.”

Shit” I hear his deep voice rumble from the other side, confirming my suspicions and Daphne has yet again betrayed me. Not that I can blame her. She, Brandon and Nathan were best friends before I came into their lives in middle school. She always has a sweet spot for him since she treats him as her brother.

I laugh into the receiver and say, “Miss me so much?”

“No, why would I? I was just checking in on you since you ran away from me 3 days ago. Wouldn’t want anyone else troubling you except me.” I could hear the worry in his voice quite carefully, but he hid it behind his snarky comment.

“Jeez, Brandy. You sound like you own me.  Well, hear this and hear this good, cause I won’t be repeating me again. I’m not a thing you can own. And it shouldn’t matter where I am. I thought you would be happy to not see my face for some time. Because I surely enjoyed the peace until now.” I growled angrily, when I remembered what happened 3 days ago, in the washroom and how into my work was I.

Frankly, I didn’t run from him because what I saw, but because what it made me feel. I felt a tang of pain in my chest at the sight and how much I try to ignore, it just didn’t go away. Also, wanted to hit that girl. So I ran away from that feeling and indulged myself into my work.

“Okay, well the professors were asking for you and how you not coming into class was highly suspicious.” He said, trying to sound indifferent, but in reality, I could hear hm beg me to tell him I was alright and name the place I was in.

“I know you are lying. I am taking online classes, you fool. I am not dumb enough to not continue my studies and- wait, do I hear someone typing in the background? Wait, you are trying to track me right? Hahaha, didn’t know you would be this much of a fool to think I don’t have jammers where I am. Oh god, give my condolences to Nathan and say he brought this up on himself.” I say and as if on cue, I heard the short circuit of what would have been once Nathan’s laptop, and laughed in triumphant before abruptly ending the call.

I switched off my phone, knowing they would try contacting me again, and switched to working.

An hour flew by when I noticed something strange happening on my house porch on one of the screens. It was Brandon. He was roughly knocking on my door, no doubt in an attempt to break in. I watched for another minute or too when I felt exhausted too much. So I took some sleeping pills and went to sleep on the bed. My thoughts running back to Brandon.

I woke up next morning and felt quite refreshed. It felt good to not wake up to an alarm. I took a quick shower and decided that I need to go home to bring more clothes here. Since today was the last day of uni before the fall break, I didn’t want to attend today’s classes. I quickly locked the space I made and protected it with my thumb print and a retina scan. The stuff I have there can’t get into anyone’s hands or else we wouldn’t know that Earth existed.

My home was a good hour drive from this place so I stopped by a diner and grabbed a breakfast to-go. This diner is my favorite. They make the best chocolate pancakes and chocolate milkshake. When I enter my car, I connect my phone with it through Bluetooth and play Charlie XCX’s songs. There beat and bass is amazing. As I was nearing my house and slurping what was left of my milkshake, I see a figure at my doorstep. All sorts of situations are going through my mind and none of them have me alive.

I do the most reasonable thing and park the car silently and grab my baseball bat from under my seat. What? If you knew what kind of work I do in my lab then you wouldn’t question my thoughts to carry a bar always. I tip toe myself on the steps and see someone’s sleeping form. I can’t see their face since they have their back to me and by the looks of it he seems huge. I first test my waters and poke him with my feet. He stirs and now I can clearly see him. It is none other than Brandon.

What is he doing here? I thought he went home after coming here. Apparently, that was not the case. And he is sleeping here. He must have caught a cold. What a fool, he could’ve slept in his car. I kneel down beside him and just stare at him. He looks so at peace like a baby. The angry lines are all wiped from his face and he has a small smile on his face, no doubt from his dreams. He looks much more attractive in this state, all relaxed and content. But even though he might kill me later, I have to wake him up.

“Brandon?” I whisper but it didn’t affect him.

“Brandon.” I try again, much louder and he just stirs and holds my hand in his but doesn’t wake up.

“Brandy!!” now I’m full on screaming and he abruptly wakes up causing me to fall flat on my bum, since he took my hand with him. Idiot.

“What? Where am I?” he says in his groggy voice, which is so sexy. I would love to wake up to this sound. Wait, I didn’t think that. Ughh, stupid heart and brain.

“Sylvia? Finally you came home. I thought I lost you. I’m so sorry.” He said, pouncing on me and wrapping me into his embrace. He is so warm and he smells just so amazing like pine trees and mint. I can’t help but snuggle deep into his embrace and take a whiff of his amazing smell.

We sit there together wrapped in each other for quite sometime, never talking just wrapped in our own thoughts but then a cold breeze blows causing me to shudder and Brandon to sneeze. We pull out of the embrace, both blushing and not making eye contact. I stand up and he does the same.

“We better get you some place warm. Don’t want you dying, unless the reason is me.” I joke and open the door for him to enter. He is only in his jeans and a half sleeved shirt, which is super thin. “Oh god, Brandon. Are you a kid? Do I have to tell you to wear warm clothes in this horrendous weather? God, you are impossible.” I yell and stomp my way to the kitchen to get something warm for him. He just chuckles and sits on the chair in the kitchen, studying my movement.

It takes me atleast an hour to prepare my mother’s chicken soup for him, which I know he loves very much and in that hour I gave him a serving of hot chamomile tea to keep him hot until I serve him the real stuff. He took the soup graciously before devouring it in mare minutes and moaning almost at every bite. He was even about to lick the bowl, after his third serving but I stopped him and stood to clean it up.

As I was cleaning the dishes, I felt him behind me and he said, “Thank you Sylvia. I don’t know how to repay you.”

I just turned my face to look at him over my shoulder to check if he was playing me again. I shut the water off and dried my hands before fully turning and saying, “Is the great jerk thanking me? This must be my lucky day.” I say in mock shock and happiness. He just chuckled and shrugged.

“Well, it was kind of my duty, I guess. Your mother would have killed me if I didn’t take care of you. You know the fake best friend drama?” I say in all seriousness and his expression just changes from happiness to hurt but he quickly masks it and agrees with me.

I was about to ask if he was feeling any better but my doorbell rang. I panicked almost instantly and Brandon noticed it and gave me concerning looks.

“Brandon go upstairs and don’t come down unless I tell you too.” He was about to argue and be manly but when he saw my expression, he didn’t question me and went upstairs.

I took a deep breath to calm my nerves down and took my bat behind me and strode towards the door.

“Hey, sugar. I believe you have a package for me?”
