5. A Serenade To Remember

Today was Friday. Tomorrow was the day of Sophia’s high school reunion. Still, I couldn’t stop thinking about Harry asking me to attend the reunion as his date. Since he had asked me earlier this week, I haven’t seen or spoken with him. He did, however, leave me his cellphone number on the fridge just in case. I saved it in my phone anyway. I had a dressed picked to wear for the event.

I was sitting on the couch, watching a movie when the doorbell rang. It was 6pm on a Friday night. I hadn’t received any calls from my friends about wanting to go out. I stood up and walked to the front door to answer it. “Harry? What are you doing here?” He was wearing a long-sleeved button up that was rolled halfway up his arms, as well as dark jeans and a pair of converse.

“I’m taking you out to dinner.”

“I’m not dressed for dinner. I’m dressed for a stay-at-home and watch a movie type of night.” Harry rolled his eyes and entered the house. I closed the door and followed him down the hallway to the Master bedroom. “Hey! What—Harry, stop going through my stuff!”

“Here, put this dress on and wear some heels. You are 25. You’re not staying in on a Friday night.” Harry hurried me into the bathroom and closed the door behind me. After about 20 minutes, I was ready to go. I grabbed my phone and small clutch before heading out the door with him.

I asked him about where he was taking us for dinner. He didn’t answer me, even when we got into the car. I buckled myself in as we began the drive down the street. I kept silent until we arrived at our destination, which had seemed awfully familiar to me.

We get out of the car. Harry leads me down a pathway until I spotted a blanket with a picnic basket in the distance. We walked over and sat down on the blanket. “Thought you were taking me to a restaurant.” I smirked.

He smiled, “Oh, you know this is better than a restaurant. We can be alone and have that 10-year conversation.”

“Harry, you didn’t have to do all this for me.”

“Yes, I did. Angela, I’ve been nothing but a jerk. I’m sure you’ve read through all my letters. I know you deserve an explanation in person. We have always been close, even growing up. We were inseparable. I know over the years we grew distant, especially when you moved to California and I became famous. It’s been hard maintaining the friendship that we had. After you moved, I figured you’d leave everything behind, including me. I mean, you’d forget my existence. I thought you might have wanted a fresh start, away from everything and everyone who didn’t matter to you. It was then I started to realize that my life has been empty without you in it. I want to try to mend the broken part of us. Though, it now seems as thought you’re not as broken as me.” Harry looked down.

“Seems like ten years living in the spotlight has made you forget who you’re talking to. Harry, of course I’m going to be hurt and upset that we ended a long friendship over The X Factor audition. I have spent years trying not to break down and cry over it. There have been moments throughout these ten years that I did because I have been wondering the same thing about you. I have had the same realization of losing someone who, was so close to me, is now not a part of my life anymore. While I was reading your letters, I thought about you and imagined how frustrated you’d be at getting your thoughts out on paper. Somewhere along the way, you started to realize that chasing after me was not the answer and moving on to someone else was. I did not read the last letter, which is dated for tomorrow. I’m not going to open it. I’d prefer it if you would tell me what’s written inside when you feel we’re both ready.” I had reached out and touched his hand.

There was a reason why I didn’t want to read the last letter. There was something about this night that I had enjoyed. Maybe it was being under the moonlit sky with all the stars, which is rare in London. Maybe there was something familiar about it that seemed to bring back a happier memory. “Why didn’t you take Taylor out here?”

“This place has a lot of memories. Besides, I recently found out she’s attending the reunion with Gigi and Zayn. Also, Selena’s going to be there with Niall and figured that they will go together as a group. When I had previously dated her, I hadn’t taken much interest in her. I guess somehow over the years we decided to give our relationship another chance. I’m not sure if I can see a future with her to be honest. With you, the thought was always there. I mean, you know we had planned out our future together before everything had changed between us.” Harry couldn’t have been anymore right. We were practically maybe 12 or 13 just talking about our future plans. Though, being here had brought me back to the very night we came here. Ten years ago I told him on a night like this that I was moving to California and wasn’t sure if I’d be moving back to London for Uni.

“I told you I was moving to Los Angeles.” I said.

He nodded, “Yeah, I remember. I was 16. You said you had something to tell me. We drove all the way across town to some park. I remember that school was over, and it was before I had gone to London to audition for The X Factor. We stood right in this very spot when you said flat out that you and your parents were moving to California. I remember you didn’t want to leave.”

“I was afraid I wouldn’t see you again.” I looked down.

“Well, this isn’t my only surprise.” Harry had told me to wait in my spot as he got up and ran back to the car. While waiting for Harry, I couldn’t help but be curious about what he had in store for me. As he came back, I noticed that he was carrying a guitar. He sat down on the ground beside me. “I wrote something, and all of a sudden I realized I had written a song about you.”

Harry started to strum the guitar an introduction before starting to sing. I listened quietly, only to find myself tearing up because the lyrics were beautiful. After he finished his song, I had no words to say. I couldn’t believe that he had written a song about me.

Once we had eaten, we gathered all of our belongings and put them into the trunk of his car. We get in and head back to my house. “I had fun Harry.” I smiled over at him. “The most fun I’ve had in quite a long time.”

“I’m the one who knows you best.” He smiled. He wasn’t wrong. There was a bit of silence between us. Both of us gazed into each other’s eyes until it happened. Neither one of us had realized we were both leaning in until the moment our lips touched.

Quickly, I pulled away with my cheeks burning hot. “It’s getting late. I have to go. Good night Harry.” I grabbed my things and stepped out of the car. I entered the house and closed the door behind me. I waited until I heard the car drive away while leaning against the door. I let out a sigh, which was shortly followed by a smile. While though I knew he was with Taylor, it did not stop me from dreaming about that kiss.
