Many Faces, One Person

Katelyn and Travis have a complicated relationship. One connection they have is through their school relationship, the weakest one, another is through video games, and they bond by using their skills and teamwork. The best relationship they have is by soothing each other with their own music as they let their emotions go. The problem is, they don't know that each of those connections are to the same person, and finding that out seemed unlikely for the both of them, until they both go through difficulties that leave them both hanging onto each other for stability.

4. Phone Call

Until the school day ended, Katelyn couldn't stop thinking about what happened during science class. She was ashamed she had shown her form, and curious to know who was listening to her music. When she returned home, Katelyn sat at the piano in the living room and played the same Russian melody she had played before. She was a self-taught pianist, never able to afford real lessons, and of course her father wouldn't pay for them. Her mind was still swimming in the day's thoughts, but the sweet melody helped calm those waves.

Katelyn played her tune until she heard her phone ding. She stood from the bench and took her things upstairs to her room, looking at her phone. It was a notification from her game, saying that one of her friends was online. It was Sen.

Quickly, Katelyn set her backpack next to her desk, sliding into her chair and turning her computer on. The game was still loaded on her computer, so she simply logged in and entered the game search lobby. She received a notification on her computer that he invited her to a party, so she pulled her headset on and turned on her mic.

"Hello?" she heard his voice. She knew she had heard it from somewhere other than the game, but she just couldn't figure out where.

"Hey Sen," she replied, tucking her bangs behind her ear and starting a game for them. She could hear some shuffling from his side of the chat, so she asked about it. "Whatcha doin?"

"Oh, my brother's just got home, nothing much," he told her as they started the game with other online players. A door opened from his side, and she heard another voice that sounded familiar.

"On that game, again?" the voice asked, to which Sen turned and replied, "Duh, now can you do your homework some other place?" he asked.

Katelyn chuckled a bit, killing him in the game since he was busy. When she heard him turn back to the game, he sighed.

"Lim!" he scolded her, resulting in her chuckling more.

"What? Was I not supposed to do that?" she asked jokingly. Sen sighed again in response.

"You didn't have to..." he mumbled. Katelyn chuckled a bit, continuing to play until she won.

"Woo!!" she cheered excitedly, throwing her hands up into the air. Sen chuckled a bit, exiting to the lobby.

"Nice win! Besides that, how was your day?" he asked her politely, buying things from the in game stores.

"Well, in biology today, this really popular kid tried to embarrass me, so we ended up fighting in the classroom... but other than that, pretty okay," she told him casually, rubbing the bite mark on her neck gently.

"You-you what..." Sen mumbled in shock. Katelyn sighed and bought things in the game stores as well.

"No big deal, I just fought him..." she informed him, acting as if it was nothing.

"You... wow... you really are as B.A. as you are while playing video games, huh..." he muttered to himself. Katelyn heard it, however, and grinned slightly.

"Yeah, I am, I deal with a lot!" she admits, enjoying speaking with him. Even though she didn't know him, she could sense he was the kind of person she could talk to for hours about things that were wrong.

After saying that, Katelyn heard her phone buzz. She picked it up and saw it was a phone call from her boyfriend, Jeffory.

"Hold on, my boyfriend is calling me," she said through the mic before stepping away from it and answering the call.

"Oh, okay..." Sen replied, knowing she couldn't hear him right now, but a hint of disappointment was in his voice. Katelyn brushed it off and held her phone to her ear.

"Hey Jeffory!" she greeted him cheerfully, wondering why he called.

"Hey Katelyn, I wanna talk with you tomorrow, behind the school, okay?" he asked, his tone calm and kind. Katelyn was curious, but decided to let it surprise her, so she didn't ask anything.

"Oh, alright! When?" she asked in return.

"Before first period. It won't be long, I promise," he assured her, already knowing she struggled to keep passing grades already.

"Uh, alright, that should work out!" Katelyn replied, smiling a bit. "Anything else?"

"Nope, that's it, see you tomorrow girly!" Jeffory chuckled as he used her nickname. Katelyn smiled a bit more, finding nicknames a cute thing.

"Alright, bye!" she responded as she hung up, still smiling. She slid back into her desk chair and put her headset back on.

"I'm back Sen!" she informed her friend cheerfully.

"Hey Lim, so what was that about?" he asked, not hearing any of the conversation. Katelyn kept buying things she needed as she replied.

"Nothing much, he just asked me to meet him behind the school tomorrow morning," she told him, knowing it was okay to tell him, since they didn't know each other.

"Oh, alright..." he sighed, seeming a bit disappointed for some reason. "Hey Lim, have you ever thought about meeting in real life?"

Katelyn paused, never considering it before. "Uh... I haven't thought about it before now..." she admitted.

"Well, if you ever want to meet, I will," he replies happily. He seemed to really want to meet her.

Katelyn smiled a bit as she continued playing the game. "Alright, I'll consider it," she promised.
