Legolas and Selena are expecting a son, due to the fact that heat radiates from the unborn child...

12. Mutantur enim lex

Kineen Nova moves through the palace with a light foot. Making her way to her parents, chambers without making a single noise and without catching the attention of a single soul. She presses her ear to the door and listens for any sign of life. Nothing. Good, just the way she likes it. Silence means her mother is embroidering and her father is studying his papers making decision. Nova might be kineen but it’s only in title until the day she turns 21. She’s only 18. Nova raises a fist to knock but lowers it. She goes off to find an announcer and gets his help. The announcer knocks on the door and announces “Kineen Nova your graces.”

“Let her in.” Legolas replies as Nova takes a step through the doors. Pausing to admire the beautiful light that her parents emit. Combined together the silver and gold make this beautiful angelic aura that feels welcoming.

“Mother, Father. I have come bearing news.” Selena puts her work down, she furrows her brow. Legolas stands to his feet and walks over to place a hand on his wife’s shoulder. It is Selena who speaks first.

“Good or bad?” Nova takes an instant to come up with a reply.

“Depends on your view of the current situation pertaining to our people.” Legolas sighs. He’s knows exactly what his child is getting at.

“You’re talking about how the sun and the moon have lost dominance over everything except birth times. You’re talking about the recent array of colors that even you seem to be wearing. It seems the rainbow has taken over almost everything. At least marriage and birth is still sacred.”

Nova lowers her head.

“I have news. I have found a worthy match.” Selena smiles. She knew Nova would find a husband in time. Legolas tries to hide his disappointment, he had so hoped that Nova would never be ruler.

“I have found a match. Her name…” Legolas doesn’t give Nova time to finish. He’s furious. Selena just cries

“HER? That’s not sacred. It’s an abomination. Her? Nova you must abide to the law. The law states that a sun child must marry a moonchild. That means one male and one female!” Nova smiles. It makes Legolas even more angry.

“WHY ARE YOU SMILING? Have you no sense?”

“Father, I am a sun child and I am a girl. I don’t think that law pertains to me. It means I can marry a moon child. Which I don’t see any male moonchildren? Seems to me the law isn’t necessary any longer.”

Selena decides to interfere, she wipes her eyes and consoles Legolas.

“She’s right darling. When the law doesn’t apply to one, then it should apply to none.” Legolas shakes his head and walks away. Selena and Nova stand in silence. Selena turns to her daughter.

“You can change the law. But you can’t change the way your father views you. Some will judge you, others will accept you. But you’ve destroyed the balance. You’ve destroyed the black and white of the world.”
