The Guy Who...

"What? You know him! I know you're new but you have to know him!" she gave a pointed look at a guy who threw his head back and laughed. He didn't notice us though.
The laugh looked forced, but it fooled everybody.
"He's the guy who took our football team to the states finals." at my blank stare, she exhaled through her nose sharply. "The guy who helped Mrs. Rudy go to the hospital."
Sounded familiar, but I shrugged.
"He's the guy who lost his little brother in a motorcycle accident." As my eyes widened in recognition, she laughed a hard laugh. "It's funny; nobody remembers him like the hero he was. They just remember him as the guy who lost his little brother."

I feel like everyone's eyes are on me as I spin the dial on my locker. As it opens, I stick my books in there. Someone walks behind me and murmurs "...not right, that's his locker." I turn around, but there's so many people around it would be impossible to find out who uttered that comment.

Emma is helping a girl who's sign languaging to her, and not surprising, Emma is signing back to her. I still don't know where my Geography class is at, so I prolong the moment where I search for the right notebook and the right pencil.

For the second time today, somebody shoulder bumps me. Hard.

The notebook falls to the ground, followed by my pencils, and pens. I reach down to grab them, but someone steps on my notebook-a shiny red stiletto, that leads up to a tan bare leg. My eyes make their way up, and I see a short black skirt, followed by a purple top.

Icy blue-green eyes stare at me. Her brown hair is wound up in so many braids in her hair that it looks like roses.

"That locker doesn't belong to you." she says, flicking her fingers in my direction.

I want to say something-badly. But my voice has been locked away for so long, I lost the key.

She glares at me, and I stand up, gripping my items in a tighter hold.

"I know you heard me, mutie. I wonder why you don't talk, and really I don't care-this locker is Eddie's. Find a new one. Now."

I make no movement, so she scoffs, and grabs my shoulder. She spins me toward where she's looking at-and it's the boy from before. He's not alone this time, there are two other guys with them.

       "You know him, don't you?"

I shake my head, the first sign that I know what she's saying. From the corner of my eye, I watch as she rolls her eyes.

Rudy go to the hospital."           Sounded familiar, but I shrugged.           "He's the guy who lost his little brother in a motorcycle accident." As my eyes widened in recognition to the story that everybody was talking about, she laughed a hard laugh. "It's funny; nobody remembers him like the hero he was. They just remember him as the guy who lost his little brother."          She stalks off, disappearing into the crowd.          I turn and jump at the sight of Emma.         "What'd I miss?"
