The Darkness In Us

A failed lab experiment

Vampires coming out of the shadows

Case and Jess's life were ripped apart as the world fell at their feet.

Jess was a rock climber but soon got into scaling rocks and she could be found at the shooting range after school. Once the world fell it became a way of survival. She always has a book in her bag to keep busy but quiet when
taking a break.

Case was a zombie apocalypse believer with her family and trained almost everyday. They were called crazy but once it happened they were the ones surviving.
Now she uses a crossbow and uses all her life skills.

1. Chapter !: Case

The world did not end with a bang, or a whisper, but rather, one scream at a time.Waking up from the sweet escape of sleep was like torture. I have never been a morning person, so waking up wasn’t exactly easy. In my old life, my mom would’ve been waking me up at 5:30 for me to get ready for school. Now I wish I could go back to that time when the worst part of my day was waiting for my depression. When I thought make-up was a need. When my parents were still alive. When the world was still running, somewhat. When I didn’t have to fight for my survival. The only time I could go back to that time was when I’m sleeping. Well, when I was sleeping and wasn’t having nightmares.

I yawn as I grab my crossbow and backpack throwing it over my shoulder. I was not in the mood to be in the apocalypse. I mean I didn’t have any real choice in the matter but this was such a shitty situation. Everyone I knew was killed two years ago. Well everyone except for one person. I knew she was alive because I taught her survival. Sure, it was a few years ago since I had seen her let alone given her a lesson but I knew she was alive. She had to be. Jess was my best friend. I get she didn’t get trained since birth like I had been from my parents, but I knew she could take care of herself. I prepared her for the worst situation possible. Which was probably this.

In this world, you can’t let your guard down. I ran as fast as I could, though it was useless. No one can outrun a vampire. That wasn’t exactly my plan though. All the myths of vampires are wrong. Garlic and stakes won’t work. I mean, why would a tree hurt a vampire? Blessed silver is the best way to go. It harms them. When they’re down is when you strike. Cut out the heart so nothing can pump the black sludge through their veins. Even with their fast healing, they can’t regrow an entire organ in a matter of minutes. That's how long it takes for them to die.

I was running from an infected. The moon was still high in the air as I ran. Seriously, why couldn't I just have one day where I didn’t have to run for my life? It was bad enough I couldn’t get any food from any of the vampire cities, but now that humans were in high demand I needed to watch my back more than ever. I mean if I could just wait till they all die off or start converting to cannibalism then I'll be somewhat safe, right?
