9. Trials

When Jack went into the secret passages again, torch in hand, he looked all over, and found someone hunched over in a hallway. He went closer to the figure and brought the torch closer to the figure’s face, which was looking at the ground. Jack then said, “Who are you?” The figure looked directly at Jack and the light of the torch showed that the figure was Jess.

He was so startled he quickly leapt back. Then he said weakly, “Jessica?”

“I’ve been looking for you.” Jessica said in a voice that didn’t seem her own. “I’ve been calling you.”

“I’m sorry, Jess. I couldn’t hear you through the walls.”

Jessica stood up and picked up a sword from the ground.

“Jessica, Jessica, listen to me. I’m sorry. I should have looked harder.” He paused. “Were you the one that screamed? Two days ago?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“King Gabriel grabbed me. I have to show you something.”

He gave her the torch and she walked down the hallway, leading him into a room. The room was lit with torches and had a bed, a bedside table, and a round table in the middle.

She said, “Someone was living here. I don’t know who. But I want to.”

Jack said, “What happened back in the chapel?”

“I don’t know. Something just overtook me. A demon or something.”

“Jess, why do you think the ‘demon’ came?”

“Anger, fury,” Jessica said.

“It was your wedding day,” Jack said.

“To someone I didn’t love.”

“Louis is gone. They’ve agreed to be our allies, even without marriage.”

“Good.”

“Let’s get you out of here.”

When Elsa and Anna saw Jessica, Elsa ran and hugged her. Anna hugged Jack, whispering, “Thanks for bringing her back.”

Jack embraced her back, whispering, “You’re welcome, Anna.”

Then, two weeks later, one hot afternoon, after lunch, Jack was in a rocking chair in the corner watching Anna and Jess play war with a bunch of toy soldiers. He told Jessica and Anna that he would be right back and left the room. The girls nodded and kept on playing. He didn’t come back.

Meanwhile, Elsa was working in her office when she heard running footsteps. A servant came in and said, “Your Majesty! KIng Jackson’s collapsed in the hallway! He’s unconscious!”

“Lead me to him! Get Jessica and Anna!” Elsa commanded.

A little while later, Jack was in the infirmary with Jessica, Anna, the doctor and Elsa by his side. The doctor took a couple of tests and said grimly, “Food poisoning.”

Elsa was taken aback.

“Will he survive?”

“I certainly hope so. Based on his immune system, he should survive.”

“He’ll live.” Jessica said. “I know it.”

She then ran off.

“Anna, follow her.”

Anna did her best, but although her speed was fast, it wasn’t as fast as Jessica.

Jessica quickly went into the secret passages and hid.

She walked the hallways and watched through the infirmary walls. She could see her father and her mother. Anna wasn’t there. She then heard her father’s voice.

“Where’s Jess?” He sounded weak and frail.

“I had Anna follow her.”

Just then Anna appeared.

“I tried my best, I couldn’t follow her,” Anna said breathlessly.

“It’s okay, Anna.” Elsa replied.

“We all know Jessica’s one of the fastest in the kingdom,” Jack said.

“You’re the fastest,” Anna said to Jack.

“If that’s true, then Jessica is second fastest,” Jack responded.

“You’ll survive, right?” Anna asked.

He sat up, wincing from the pain, and said, “If I don’t, you’ll know why.”

“I hope you do. I’m sure Jess does, too. I think that’s why she ran off. She didn’t want to...see you this way.” Anna said. “Sickly.”

Jack laughed and said, “I feel fine now, but I might want to take it easy the next few days. I’ll just watch you and Jess play.”

“Okay,” Anna said. “I’ll try to find Jess again.” She ran off.

Jessica slowly came out of the secret passageways and ran to her room.

Anna arrived a couple of seconds later.

“Jess! There you are! Jack’s awake! He wants to see you!”

Jessica followed her to the infirmary and called to Jack from down the hall, “I’ve got her!”

Jessica walked down to where Jack lay. He smiled at her and said, “I’ll be okay, Jess. I promise. I’m taking the next few days easy.”

Jessica couldn’t manage a smile back.

Then, the next day, Jack was sitting in the rocking chair, leaning forward and watching Jessica and Anna play with the toy soldiers.

“Don’t you two ever get tired of that game?” he asked gently.

“No,” Jessica said. “We’ve been playing this for 3 days straight now.”

“Okay,” Jack said. He simply  leaned back and watched them play.

The next day, they decided to play something else: tag. He laughed as he watched them play. They got bored, and got a bin of blocks, stacked the blocks, then knocked them down, and it started all over again.

Jack felt better to work in the office the next day, so that’s what he did. From then on, everything was normal. Until two months later.

Jack and Elsa were in their offices and since it was sunny outside, Anna and Jessica were playing outside. A messenger came with mail from from faraway kingdoms every week. The messenger came and put the mail on Jack’s desk like always. The first one on top said, “To King Jackson of Arendelle from Queen Alexandra II of Neamond.”

He opened it and read it.

To King Jackson of Arendelle,

I am writing to you to plead the release of my husband. For if you do not let him go, I will declare war on you, and lives will be lost, including your daughter’s.  Release my husband to me, and we will be on good terms.

                        Sincerely,

                    Queen Alexandra II of Neamond

Jack started writing immediately. He sealed it in an envelope, and then put into the “Send” pile on his desk. He went to Elsa’s office and knocked on the door.

He went in and said, “The queen of Neamond sent me something.”

He showed it to her and said, “I told her that her husband would not be returned to her as he has been guilty of harming Jessica.”

“We can’t go to war! If we do-”

“We have no choice, Elsa!” Jack snapped.

Elsa was silent for a moment, and then finally sighed and said, ”Okay, fine. We’ll go to war.”

“I’ll go to war. You and Jess and Anna stay here.”

“I don’t want either of them hurt.”

“Neither do I, Elsa.”

The week after, they held a trial for Gabriel of Neamond. The royal family was in the same position as they were for Carrie’s trial. The transcript is as follows:

His Majesty The King: Gabriel of Neamond, you are accused of harming Jessica intentionally, as well as attempting to murder me. What do you plead?

Gabriel: I plead innocent to the crime of harming Jessica and the attempted murder.

    HM: Truly?

    Gabriel: Yes.

*His Majesty turns to Her Royal Highness The Princess Jessica*

HM: *to HRH The Princess Jessica* Jess? What do you think?

HRH: *angrily* I think he’s lying.

    HM: Is that true?

    *He turns back to Gabriel*

HM: I believe this man is guilty of harming a princess and attempted murder.

Gabriel: No, I am innocent.

HRH: I don’t think so.

*She then gets up from the desk and walk over to Gabriel’s table. She puts her hand on the table*

HRH: Once my father says you’re guilty, you’re guilty. I know many ways to punish you. Ways I don’t think you would’ve thought of on your own.

*Her nails begin to turn into claws, her teeth seem to become razor sharp*

HM: Jessica?

HRH: I can easily take one of my nails and slit your throat. I would suggest you don’t get me angry.

*She scratches the table’s wood with her claw-like nails, creating a screeching sound and leaving marks. She then turns her back and walks back to sit next to the royal family, who seem horrified. His Majesty regains his composure*

HM:Your punishment is torture. 7 months. Guards, take him back to his cell.

*The guards drag him out of the courtroom. Everyone leaves*

-END OF TRANSCRIPT-

Jack went back to his office. They locked Gabriel up, and left him in the cell.

Then, one evening, 3 days after the trial, Jack then knocked on the playroom door, went inside, and closed the door behind him. Elsa, Anna, and Jess were there, seated on the floor playing with blocks.

“I need to tell you something,” he said solemnly. “All of you.”

“What is it, Jack? Did something happen?” Elsa asked.

He sat in the rocking chair and put a hand to his forehead, and said, “I will be going to war in 3 days to fight the queen of Neamond.”

Everyone was silent for a moment, and then Anna said, “The queen of Neamond. That’s Queen Alexandra II.”

“Yes,” Jack said.

“You don’t want to upset her! She’s the strongest queen in the world, from what I’ve heard!”

“I upset her, and I will go to war.”

“What if you don’t live?”

“I’ll live.”

“I hope so.”

Jessica hadn’t said anything.

“Jess? What do you think?”

She looked up at him, then got up and ran out of the room without a word.

“Jess?” Jack called after her.

She refused to answer.

That night he read a journal that they had found in Gabriel’s cell. They had given it to him that afternoon when he was working in his office, and they were about to take him to the torture chamber. He laid in bed and started reading.

1st Entry: July 17th

I have found the perfect bride for my son. Princess Jessica Frost of Arendelle. She will be my son’s bride. Edward seems excited by this news. He says to me, “Father, if we wed to each other, I will be the happiest man in the world..” I just have to tell King Jackson of Arendelle, Princess Jessica’s father.

2nd Entry: July 31st

I have sent a letter asking King Jackson to give his daughter’s hand in marriage to Edward. I certainly hope that he says yes,. If he says no, I will go to war with him. I refuse to not have Princess Jessica be Edward’s bride.

3rd Entry: August 9th

King Jackson has sent back, declaring that Edward will not be Jessica’s husband. I have sent an army waiting for them. They will take Jessica by force. I must know her better. I know of her reputation, but not of her personality. Her reputation is outstanding, perfect for Edward.

4th Entry: August 11th

I have Jessica AND Jackson in cells right now. I had her chained up and was making her tell me Arendelle’s secrets when he came up behind me and told me to let go of his daughter. My guards chained him up too. Then they escaped somehow and we put them into cells. Alexandra has told me to be careful and to try to cover my tracks. “What tracks?” I asked. “I have none.” She didn’t answer me.

5th Entry: August 12th

They have escaped! I don’t know where they’ve gone to! My guards have searched Neamond high and low and still have not found them! I believe I know where they’ve been to: they have gone back to Arendelle. I will saddle my horse with Edward and get to Arendelle now.

Jack stopped reading. He had to get to bed, it was 10 at night.

Two days later, that night, Jack knocked on Jessica’s door. She hadn’t come out of her room, but she did eat and drink. She didn’t sleep.

He went in and saw Jessica in her chair, her back turned to him. He then said, “I’ll be leaving early in the morning, maybe before you wake up, so I’ve come to say goodbye.”

She turned in the chair. She stared at him for a while and then got up, ran to him, and hugged him.

“I don’t want you to die.”

Jack didn’t speak for a moment. Then he responded:

“I won’t die, Jess, I promise.”

Then, the next morning, at 7, he saddled his horse with the knights and took one last look at Arendelle Palace. He saw Jess watching through the window, and lifted his hand. She lifted hers, and set it down. She then dashed from the window and came out a second later through the palace doors. She went up to him and gave him something. It was a mirror, a duplicate of the one she’d gotten from the enchantress.

“This is so you can see us even if you’re not here.”

“Jess, this is an ordinary mirror.”

She shook her head and took it and said to the mirror, “Show me Momma.” The mirror showed Elsa in her office. She showed it to Jack.

He was surprised and finally said, “The enchantress gave this to you.”

“This is a duplicate of the one she gave me. It works just as well.”

He looked at Jessica, accepted it as she pressed it into his palm, and said, “Thanks, Jess. I’ll make sure to look at it every day.”

She smiled, and he said, “I love you, Jess. You know that, don’t you?”

“Yes.” Jessica responded back.

Then, he snapped the reins and rode out, followed by the knights. Jessica watched as he faded into the sunrise.

Then, she went back inside, and said to the mirror, “Show me Daddy.” The mirror showed Jack riding his horse with the knights behind him. She put the mirror into a drawer in her bedside table and left the palace.

She went to Carrie, who was always awake at this time. She talked to her throughout the day, about her father going to war, the new dress Carrie was making, and other things. When it was sunset, she then said, “I’ll be right back. I want to show you something.”

She went back, grabbed the mirror, and went to Carrie, saying, “Watch.” She commanded the mirror, “Show me Daddy.” It showed Jack firing a gun. He looked so focused and intent.

“Wow,” Carrie replied, astonished.

“The enchantress gave it to me.” Jessica said.

“That’s amazing.” Carrie said.

“I wish I could fight.”

“Maybe you could.”

“No. It’s too dangerous.”

“Sadly. I wish it wasn’t.”

“So do I.”

Then, 3 days later, Jessica commanded the mirror, “Show me Daddy.” It showed her father firing a gun. Then, suddenly, he fell to his knees and put his hands on his chest. When he took them away, there was red all over. He’d been wounded. The knights had quickly covered him and helped him back to the trench, where they laid him down and got a doctor to help him. She saw Jack black out 3 seconds later, and then the mirror went back to show her own reflection.

She didn’t know what to do.

She stayed in her room, refused to talk to anyone.

A couple of long, agonizing months later, in the afternoon, Anna burst into Jessica’s room.

“Jess! Jack’s come home! Come on!”

Jessica moved rapidly, following Anna to the playroom, where Jack was stacking blocks, Elsa beside him. He turned when he heard their footsteps, and smiled as Jess and Anna came in.

“Hey, Jess,” he said weakly.

Jess ran up to him and hugged him. He knelt and hugged her back.

"Now I have something to tell you. So you need to be cautious with how strong you squeeze me when you hug me, okay?"

They all nodded.

“I was shot.” Jack said. "If you squeeze me too hard, it will hurt like fire."

“You’ll be okay,” Jess said.

“Yes.” he replied. “I’ll be okay. As long as I don’t move much.”

They all smiled. Then Jess said, “You can watch Anna and I play!”

“Yes, I can,” Jack said.

“Then come on! You get to sit in the rocking chair again! Anna, come on! We gotta play!”

Elsa laughed and said, “I’ll watch, too. It’ll be interesting.”

They played war while Jack and Elsa watched. 2 hours later, they were still playing. Jack felt an excruciating pain in his chest, not where he’d been shot. He felt something moving. He winced.

“Are you okay?” Elsa asked.

“No. I think there’s something inside me. Something moving.”

She called the doctor in, and he was taken to the infirmary.

Jess, Elsa, and Anna stayed by his side.

When they laid him down on the bed, he winced again. The pain was so great, he nearly blacked out. But he stayed awake and whispered, “I’ll be fine.” Finally, 2 seconds later, he blacked out.

It turned out the moving was a parasite, which the doctor was able to extract.

He woke up a day later and became better. When he did, everything returned to normal. For the time being.
