In Between The Trees

I told her not to go, in between those trees were things that you wouldn't even see in your nightmares. But she did anyways, and now it's up to me to find her. I made a promise that if she left that I would come back for her...and I do not break promises.

5. Chapter 4. Soria Mabel

As we came to a halt I got even more nervous than before. As I heard murmuring, I started to tune in on the conversation. First it was an unfamiliar voice.

“This is the girl that Chief told you to go capture right?”  He emphasized the is.

Then it was Roscoe, “Yes sir.”

The unfamiliar voice came again. “Alrighty then.”

After a brief pause, I heard the unknown person raise his voice and say. “No reason to worry, it's no threat it's just one of us. Open the gates!” Did he say one as in me? Or as in the four people carrying me. I heard loud horrifying creaks most likely from the gates opening, it sent shivers up and down my body. Everything was quiet when the gates stopped. Just the silent whisper of people around me.

Things like: “Is that the Queen?” or the occasional, “Did the Chief seriously bring some killer into our camp?” and last but not least a simple, “What was the Chief thinking, she's gonna kill us all.”

As the people carried me forward, I just couldn't take it no more. The things people were saying were ridiculous. “Let me go!” I started to wiggle my body even more. “I don't wanna be here with you assassins!” I shouted.

But I guess I should've just kept my mouth shut because the whispers were growing louder. They got more horrific as they carried me on.

Things like: “I won that bet, I told you she was the Queen, now owe up.” or “First she's gonna kill us, then she's gonna try for the Chief.” and finally, “Why is she pretending she doesn't know who we are, she knows her plan is to kill us all.”

It was to late now, tears flooded my eyes and they poured. What had been the news before they captured me? Did they somehow make themselves believe that I was a murderer before they even went out to search for me!? I ignored everything and just closed my eyes. I slowly breathed in and out, calming myself.

A few minutes later and I had been set down on a flat surface. I let out a sigh of relief but I soonly sucked that sigh of relief right back in when I heard the lock of a door. I felt cold fingers untying the bag that was around my head. As the bag slowly got pulled off of my head, I squinted my eyes at the unexpected fluorescent lights above me.

I cocked my head to the side and I saw a woman starting to untie the ropes around my wrists.

“I’m sorry about all of this.” The lady said. I had recognized this voice. It was the lady that was carrying me along with the other three men.

As I quickly sat up I started to look at my surroundings. I was on a cold metal table and my legs were straight in front of me still tied together. I looked around the room. It was just me and the lady in this solid white almost medical like space.

“Don't be alarmed, I assure you, we are not assassins.” She said with a slight laugh at the end, lightening the mood.

The lady was very pretty. She had long wavy brown hair, and oval face. Her cute button nose was coated with tiny freckles matched with crystal blue eyes that looked like the ocean.

“Is there something wrong with my hair?” She asked with another slight laugh. Making it obvious that I was staring at her for a little too long than I should have.

“Sorry...but your just unbelievably gorgeous.”

She snickered lightly and just shook her head. “That's the first thing you have to say when I take a bag off your head in a random place?”

I smiled, “It’s the first thing I could think of.” I replied. She smiled back making the mood much lighter than it already was.

“I'm sure you could think of a lot of things right now, but I assure you all your questions will be answered within time.” I squinted my eyes looking at her and said, “I wish everyone here was like you.”

She breathed in heavily, letting the breath out in a more unsettled way and said. “Well, they usually are never like that. But something had gotten around in the camp and now...well it's a long story.” She sighed but ended it with a confident smile.

“If you untie my legs, I got plenty of time. Not like i'm going anywhere anytime soon.” I replied ironically.

As she untied the ropes from around my knees and ankles she started to talk.“About six months ago we had rescued a girl, just like you. If she had wandered in this forest a couple years earlier, she could of got herself killed because we hadn't installed our high quality cameras around the forest yet. But like I was saying, our cameras had caught her on tape so we took her in, we didn't tie her up like you though and i’ll explain why in a bit. And it's a good thing we took her in when we did because there are things in those woods, things that you wouldn't even have in your nightmares because they're just that scary. And I know it's hard to believe but it's true. The only reason we have this camp here is because most of these people here were injured from the bombing that happened a while back. Well, it wasn't really a bombing. But that's our code for it. The thing that really happened was tremendous, it was more than horrific. No one dares to speak of it. And I know it's hard to understand now, but this village is huge, people have mated and now we have actual babies from other people that were born in this camp. But now let's talk about you. So these things that I told you about, these things that roam the forest, they have their own alliance, there own camp. But it is much much larger than ours. And unlike our camp they have a Queen that rules there camp, we have a King but we call him the Chief. And a few hours ago we had spotted you, or what we thought was the queen roaming a little too close to our camp. The Chief had demanded we go find you and capture you in case you knew anything, or to see if you were really the Queen. And I guess someone overheard about the capturing and they had told everybody in the camp that you were the queen. And that is why you got tied up in case you were a threat, unlike Savannah.” She ended it with a long sigh.

I tried swallowing the knot in my throat but it did no good. “'re saying, everyone here thinks i'm some Queen mass murderer of a whole bunch of other murderers and now i'm here. In this place. I have you know i'm just a 17 year old girl who was looking for her friend that disappeared 6 months ago, and the only thing that is making me happy right now is that, that girl you rescued 6 months ago, I think that's her.”

The woman nodded, “Yes that is what i'm saying, and by any chance, is your friend's name Savannah?”

I nodded and I started to smile like an idiot. A single tear fell from my eye from joy. She was alive! My friend, my sister, my one and only thing that made me feel happy, was alive! The woman suddenly frowned, making me frown also.

“What's wrong?” I asked.

“Well, you can't quite go anywhere to see her right now because the Chief thinks you're a threat to our whole camp.”

I nodded slightly, “It’s okay, I understand, but by any chance may I have your name?”

She smiled, “It's Soria, Soria Mabel.”

I smiled back, “Well nice to meet you Soria, Im Opal, Opal Novak.”

She did a small curtsy, and said “Well it's very nice to meet you Ms. Novak.” We both chuckled.

I felt something in my stomach, something like safety and importance. Maybe these people thought I was some kind of killer but for some reason I felt safe, like if this is what I was longing to find. I started to think to myself, this was it.

This is my new home.
