3. The Truth

After we left the building, Juliana followed us outside to introduce me to the new family.

Juliana turned to me, knelt down on one knee, and said, "Sarah, this is Brian, Haylee, and their son Kale. They've been waiting for a while to find a little girl. Kale is their only child. They'd really be happy for you to join their family."

Since I was so shy, I just nodded my head. I had to admit, I was scared to leave a place that no one wanted to be. My friends were here; not elsewhere. But it wasn't my choice to leave, it was this family's.

Juliana walked over to the parents, took out a envelope, and whispered to them. Hmm, I wonder what she's saying to them. Does it have to do with my past? My parents dying? Or is it something about me that I don't even know? She continued to whisper as she handed over the envelope. Finally, she finished and walked back inside. The new family coaxed me over to them, and we started to walk away. "But Juliana didn't say goodbye. I need to say goodbye to her," I said in my usual, higher pitched, nervous voice.

"Don't worry she's going to be coming back out in a few, but while we're waiting... There's something you need to know and it's not going to be easy to convince you," Brian reassuringly said.

We walked over to the pick nick table that I would always sit at with Jewel, and sat down. I figured there was something that needed to be taken out of the bag. There always is.

"Sarah? Do you believe in fairy tails? Like vampires, werewolves, and fairies?" Haylee asked. Haylee had knelt down and looked me in the eyes. Not forcefully, but something about her eyes told me that she was being serious. She took me by my hand and started to rub her thumb over my palm. "It's okay Sarah. You can talk to us. We won't hurt you, we promise."

I looked around at Brian and Kale, but I gave a soft "Yeah." I had always believed in fairy tails. I always thought they were real; even Johnny would tell me whatever I do, to believe in them. Ever since I was little my father would read my favorite book Sleeping Beauty before I went to sleep.

"So, I know you won't believe this, but in time you will see the truth. Our family isn't human. And we have to tell you; neither are you."

I looked down at my feet and mumbled, "I always thought there was some thing different about me. I was never like the other people around me." I was always left out. I had, some would say, "special powers." I could hear better than others, I never needed a light at night. I always seemed like there was something off with me. And now I know.

Kale smiled, and I could see small fangs hanging out of his gums. I think he was doing that to show me that his parents were not lying. I looked back at my feet and slowly raised my hand to my teeth. For some reason I think I could feel small fangs, but then again it may just be my imagination.

"Yes, you have small fangs, but they'll get bigger over the next few months. Us vampires always had to be different than human, but we are our own type of people."

I giggled at an idea I got. "Will I be able to fly as well?" I knew it was a ridiculous idea, but I just had to find out. Maybe I could; maybe not. I would always have a time to find out.

I think I was right about it being a ridiculous idea because all three of them looked at me and laughed quietly. "No. Vampires can not fly, but I bet you right now, if we were to go somewhere private, you could try running really fast. I bet you are one of the fastest people around here. Maybe you and Kale can run together. Have a little race."

I looked at Kale with a big smile and said, "That would be fun. Can we Kale?" I was already starting to like this family. They were nice and fun to hang around.

Kale looked at me like he just got a puppy for Christmas, took me by the hand, and we ran off. I don't know if it was just me, but I swear I felt sparks fly up my arm. We ran around the parking lot, around the playground out front, and along the deserted street. When we got back Juliana was waiting next to Brian and Haylee with tears rolling down her cheek. Even though I really liked this family, I didn't want to leave Juliana. She was everything to me. I couldn't just leave her.

Finally, Juliana knelt down, took me in her arms, kissed my forehead, and said, "I'm gonna miss you Sae. I'm gonna try to come and visit some time. Maybe I could take you out to the park. We could hang out for a while. You'll never be far away from me; nor my heart. I love you Sae."

Just with those words, I started to cry. "I love you too Juliana. Please don't forget about me," but even as I said those words I knew Juliana would never forget me. Never.

Brian and Haylee took me by the hands and led me to their car. Kale and I got into the back seat and drove off.
