6. New leaf

Next morning...

Mortel's P.O.V

It began in a usual way.  The helicopter hits an air turbulence and my stomach seems to hate it.I should have gotten used to this by now, it's not the first time I have to travel by air. Then again maybe it was not the turbulence that unleashed the butterflies in my stomach.

"You okay?" Felix warily asked as we prepared to land. I could only mumble a reply, I didn't know what to say. Looking out to the landscape reminded me of how vulnerable all our lives are when mother nature decided to turn her back on us. She left us with an advance segregation. When the realm started to weaken after Madeline had crossed, the system told us to turn a blind eye to it. She brought what the system described as 'Plague'. Hunters would die out of nowhere. They told us the news would die down but I guess the joke was on them since the 'plague' broke into in the Realm patrolling station core last weekend. The death toll seems to be rising a lot lately I'm scared that it will rise even higher once we arrived at Hoya's place. Hoya controls all the land between the outskirt of the city to the wasteland. Felix often refers to it as the land of disease. The helicopter started to lower itself onto the makeshift landing pad.

"Alright everyone, fasten your mask!"

People were already scattered across the gravel ground.  Like it was every other time we were sent here. They merely resembled human but rather overused rag doll. The street signs were freshly spray painted with blood. The air was dense with the smell of scorched flesh and smoke linger in a mist that partially eclipses the blood-red sun that was glaring down on us all. It will be a few more days before Felix sends a return helicopter but until then our mission as medical staffs are on track. Though most of us are not regarded as Medical hunters, we all know the basics of preliminary care.

"Are they...alive?" Alexer whispered as we began to set up the medical tents.

"Alive is the very broad term, but I suppose they are," Kai answered. He wasn't must of a talker so I was rather amused that he answered before I did.

It appeared that the eternal army of wind is working against us today.  Screams filled the thin morning air as more patients began to experience the aftermath from their treatments.

"Doctor, don't let me die!" my patient screeched as I started to stitch his wound. The gash was above his knee, it was so deep that I swore that I could see the bone beneath the sunburnt flesh. Blood leached slowly but heavily from the wound.Whatever made the gash nearly open the major artery.I'm sure he was having unbearable stabbing pain. I couldn't reply to him honestly. I won't hand out false hope to my patient  He was somewhere in the mid-fifties and in a disaster like this, it's not common for people his age to survive.

"What's your name?" I asked while searching for pain-killers. With panic, I scanned the tent to see if anyone could lend me a hand but as expected, everyone was preoccupied with at least one patient.

"James Lee" he groans in reply.

"Alright Mr Lee, you ready?"

Dust began to settle as numerous patients started to die. If the rate rose any higher, human extinction could be possible. We already lost thousands to the cruelty of Hoya. Gently, I fastened the knot and started to cleanse the wound. James skips in and out of consciousness, it won't be long till it is completely gone. The foolish thing, it's useless to be alive in this condition.

"If you live or you die, it's up to you now" I whisper softly as I injected another pain-numbing serum into his vein. His porcelain face only turns paler after I remove the needle.

"Mortel, it's time to go" I must have been too focused on my patient to notice the sound of the approaching cars, our transport. Carefully I readjust my filter mask before leaving the medical tent along with the rest of the medical staff.

As the cars began to leave, I started to transfer all the documented casualties into the log book... that was when I came across his name.

"Wait,  please stop the car!" my pleading scream was ignored. Kai was only sitting opposite to me, there was no way that he could not have heard it.

"Please, I need to see my -" Kai pointed his gun at my neck. His eyes lack any sympathy and his grip on the gun was tense

"Hey Kai, what did your friend say?" The driver shouted back to us.

Kai's  P.O.V

"Nothing, she said nothing" as soon as those words left my mouth, I felt a throbbing headache.

"Kai, you are not considering this through," a much familiar voice made its way into my ear. Slowly my surrounding began to obscure. Soon enough I was standing on a flat wasteland.

"Trust me, if that was true, I would have been dead by now" I chuckled as I turned to face her.  Laying beneath her foot is a body of a man. Blood enclosing on her wand which was placed directly on top of the body- drawing every drop of his blood.  Her ebony eyes gaze right into me. There was no remorse nor regret. Just anger.  The wind began to pick up its momentum as she shifted closer to me. The sand crystals galloped through me, reminding myself that I was only mentally there. And even though I know that she couldn't hurt me, her presence alone scares me to death. Now that I have time to observe the destruction she has done to the Realm Patrolling station, I began to doubt the potential of my unit.

"Why are you giving me your location?'' I was puzzled. Strategically, it just doesn't make sense.
"Oh please, you guys already know I'm here. Now it's just a matter of time until I find the beloved king." She gently settles her icy hand on the side of my face. The possibility of her killing me suddenly appear to be much more likely. Her gentle action was assaulted by her hatred gaze.
" If Hoya dies before I got my troops together, your mother will be next on my list," she whispered. Her gentle touch triggers my goosebump.

"Remember who put you there my sweet Kai, as soon as you waver... " Gently, she placed her wand on my chest.

"My mercy for your mother does too."

"Kai?We've arrived. KAI!" Jo, one of my team members shook me awake. He looked at me strangely.

"Come on man, Mortel is going on a rampage, we better find cover."
