Grandma

Grandma Evans just stood there with her mouth wide-open, right hand clutched to her body. She had been caught in the act of trying to remove a priceless object from an alarmed display stand.

Chapter 11. Help

“Stop it William, I was here first.” With that, I pushed my head back into the fireplace.

We lived in a big old house where both up and down flues joined in the middle. Don’t ask me how or why, but one could hear what was going on in the other rooms, depending which fireplace one had one’s head in.

“You’re hogging it again, Sammy. Let me have a turn.” William said this, while pulling at my legs.

“Oh alright,” I said. Letting him take my place, only because kneeling on the hard tiles, was starting to hurt. Next time we changed over, I got a cushion for my knees.

Poor Grandma was in big trouble when we returned home. Dad had been very, very, angry, not allowing her to leave the house alone. We couldn’t help as we were back at school.

Something had to be done he kept on complaining to Mum. ”That damn woman must see a doctor.”

Mum tried everything to get her mother to see a doctor. Eventually Grandma gave in and agreed to see one as long as it was a house call.

Today was the doctor’s second visit. She was downstairs, using Dad’s study.

She was asking about Grandma’s childhood. It was really interesting the way she was getting Grandma to tell her stories.

I had to laugh when Grandma told about this one time she had picked a load of pretty flowers and presented them to her grandmother, our great grandma, only to be told off for stealing. It appears she had taken them from next door’s front garden, just gone in and picked them, not realising that they belonged to someone else. Apparently, at that age she thought that they belonged to everyone like in the Garden of Eden.

According to the doctor’s conversation with Dad later after the session, she informed him that she had possibly found the first signs of why Grandma was stealing. Of course, she couldn't tell him what had gone on in the session only that it was encouraging.
