21. Murder

"Authorities say that the victim, a Miss Sara Harborn, a teacher at Brimswood High School, was found mutilated in her car, only a few miles from her house.  Reports say the Ms. Harborn was missing her right arm, and appeared to have been mauled on by an animal.  There are no current suspects on this case.  Could this be a gruesome murder?  Or possibly a wild animal attack?  More on this story as it develops." The reporter finishes her segment.

"Whoa." I say, looking down from the TV screen.

"I know, right?  Crazy." Tim says, taking a sip of his soda.

We're currently at Pizza Palace.  We had had a LONG band practice, and decided to stop for some food on the way home.

Of course, I'd already known about Ms. Harborn's murder.  Director Jones called me in at 2 a.m. this morning after the MCU found and had me run some tests on her.  Looking for scents, traces, blood test, to find out pretty much nothing, except that the lady had low iron and needed to see a doctor.

"I can' believe this happened to her." I say, trying to sound really compassionate and somewhat surprised.

"Eh, she had it coming." Tim leans back in his chair.  I look at him.

"What?"
"She was a bitch to me.  Failed me in 10th grade.  Bitch got what was coming to her." He smiles at me, taking another sip of soda.

"You're horrible!" I say, though I can't help smiling.  Tim can make any situation better by just opening his mouth and saying something.

"Well you're the one laughing!"

"Well you're the one who said it!"

Our pizza arrives and we sit and talk and eat for a while.  Finally, we go our separate ways and go home.

I got the last piece of pizza to take home with me because Tim lost the thumb war.

It's all in the angle, I told him.

I arrive back at my apartment when I get a call from Director Jones.

He tells me to come in immediately.

I transform and rush over.  Judging by the urgent tone in his voice, this can't be good.

When I arrive I change back into Ragan before anyone spots me and I head into Director Jone's office.

"You asked to see me?" I say, shutting the door behind me.

"Hart, thank God you're here.  We've just come up with a prime suspect in the Harborn murder case."

"Really?  Who?"

"You're not going to like who it is." He says, sitting down in his chair.  I sit also.

"Of course I won't  They're a murderer.  Just tell me."

"It's Campbell." Director Jones admits.

I feel myself tense up and the air go cold.

"Campbell?"

"Yes, Campbell."

"But, how?  I followed him home last night and he went to bed.  He NEVER left his house until 6:47 this morning on his way to school."

"Well, we never saw him exit through any of the recorded exits, but what if he had a secret way in and out of the house.  A trap door maybe?"

"That could be possible.  Why would he kill Ms. Harborn, though?  Every time I saw them they were really nice to each other."

"Well, Campbell's nice to many people, doesn't mean he's a good person and won't hurt them."

"Point taken."

"From now on, you will no longer be monitoring Campbell at his house.  We have a special team who can do a full night watch, and search the house for any possible hidden entrances."

"Alright.  Still on the watch at school, correct?"

"Correct.  And, be extra careful, Ragan.  Campbell is back to his murderous ways, and I highly doubt this is the end of them."

I nod and leave the office.

Well, at least I can say one thing:

It was a murder.

Great.

Now Tim owes me ten bucks.
