Anne had dreams of the scarecrow. She was reading the newspaper about the disappearances of twenty Kansas children. Her mother, who was drinking coffee, stared at the article. "The writer, Nelson Kendall, II, said the scarecrow attacked teenagers over a period of a decade or more", Cindy said. She gazed at Mark Douglas, her boyfriend, who was painting the walls. "Scarecrows are terrifying things", Mark said. He stopped finishing the left-side of the creamy hallway; he gazed at the walls...and started to paint.

"Mom, I'm going to the farm house to see Cody".

"Who's Cody?", Cindy asked her.

"He and his sister Lisa are staying with their Grandfather for the weekend", she answered her. She wore blue flares, black socks, and brown shoes on her feet. Her silver watch gleamed in the warm sun. Anne opened the back door; she checked the sun's rays, as she walked down Staples Road. Cody smiled at her. "I'm glad you came, Anne". She kissed him. And then they headed to the farmhouse's double doors. "The scarecrow is there...", Cody begun to say; Lisa was about to say something when their Grandfather gazed at the empty fields. "Children, let's go inside. I'll call the Sheriff".

Sheriff Reed Jenkins, Jr., was on his third coffee by nine o'clock AM. He finished it, before he the telephone rang; the call was from the Grandfather of Cody and Lisa. "What's the matter?", he asked him. "The scarecrow's gone from my fields, Sheriff; the scarecrow moved", he answered. The Sheriff shook his head. "Look, there's been a lot of trouble in Kansas already...". "I know that, Sheriff. Can you investigate?". The Sheriff shook his head. "No". And he hung up, and that was the end of the short conversation.
