2. The Demon Cross

****

"The Demon Cross makes all demons powerful", Zara said. It smiled at me, as it watched David squirm. I watched the other demons laugh, as I sensed the sound of heavy footsteps coming towards the tavern. April stopped cleaning the bar, and tables, with a red cloth; hot steam came from them. Then, as I walked to the fireplace, my hands sizzled. But, to my surprise, nothing happened.

~~~~
Dee Firestone grinned at me.
"Marjorie, my dear. I'm glad that you're alive". I nodded. I was a survivor; I was..., I thought to myself. Dee was talking to Carl Jaeger Firestone, her brother. He seemed to listen intently about the Demon Lords. I shuddered at the news. Suddenly I noticed David was wearing a grey hat. "It suits you", I said. David nodded. He was wearing a grey coat, black shirt, black jeans, red socks, and black, polished, shoes on his feet. "That's better", I said. David was blushing. "Yeah, right! Marjorie I hate the clothes. But the shoes are good to wear". I nodded. As he stared at me, I felt my heart beat faster. "Now you're a hunter", I said. David nodded. "Some demons aren't evil", he said. I nodded, as I warmed my hands by the fireplace, as steam whooshed towards my hellish hands. Nothing happened. And I knew that being a fire-demon was part of me.
~~~~

The sound of heavy footsteps caused me to look around. I opened the front door, lightly scorching it with my demonic right hand; I stared at several regal looking demons. They didn't bow to me; they didn't care about me. One of them watched me. "Move away, girl", Lord Hell said. I backed away. Zara shook her head. "Marjorie is a fire-demon, my Lord. It's bad luck to push her around". Lord Hell, who was six foot three, nodded. It had three horns on its flaming red head; it had red, sunken, eyes. It wore a black coat, black breeches, black socks, and black, polished, boots on its feet; it was wearing a gold wedding ring on its right, middle finger. Lady Hell, its wife, was also tall. She had long, black hair, black, sunken, eyes, and tall. It wore a black gown. It glided towards us, as she watched me intently. "A fire demon near The Demon's Cross. It's unheard of". I imagined that the demons hadn't met one for a long time. Zara took me away from them. She paved the way for the Demon Lord and Demon Lady, as April gasped. "My Lord. My Lady. I welcome you to the tavern". Lord Hell nodded. It stared at its wife's gold wedding ring on its right, middle, finger; it stared at the chairs where other demons were eating their meals. I was hungry; I paid three gold coins for a beef pie. I had four gold coins left. I saw David watching Lord Hell. He had an inclination to attack it; he stared at it with anger. "Leave Marjorie alone", he ordered. Lord Hell didn't gasp; he never gasped. "A lot of humans are foolish to deal with me, boy". As April served me my pie, I smiled at her. "Leave David alone, My Lord...and I'll forget what you said happened", I said boldly. Lord Hell's eyes were aflame; its eyes burned as it pondered what I was saying. "Serve me, Marjorie...and I'll let you live". Zara nodded. "You'd better do as it says, Marjorie". All of the demons were watching me with keen interest. I moved confidently towards the Demon Lord. "No! I serve The Demon Cross". And the Demon Lord's face drained of colour...and it knew that what I was saying had forced its hand, as it knew that I was a fire-demon who had a lot of power.

~~~~
Lord Blackheart and Lady Redwood noticed the newcomers. "Lord Hell. I didn't know you were at the Demon's Mark Tavern", the Lord said. Lord Hell shook its head. "I have important business here". It focused its eyes on me; it watched me with intense hatred. I ignored it. "What kind of business?", Lady Redwood asked it. "The Hell's Guard spotted some angels nearby; they were arrested before they headed back to Heaven. They were spoken to before they vowed to leave Hell forever", Lord Hell answered her. I was listening intently; I was determined to live; I was dreaming of a better future without the thought of imminent threat. Mom and Dad never thought that I would fail homework in the human world; I would think that being human was normal. But I wasn't normal, and that was the point of the whole matter. I was a fire demon...and I had used magical powers that caused me to flee home...and go to Hell...where I belonged.
~~~~

The weather was a black colour outside. I ignored it. I yawned. After lunch, I slept on a seat near the fireplace. I dreamed of a future that was full of death. Maybe I wanted, (or needed), to think that I would think that my friends would protect me from the Hell Lord. I slept soundly...and vowed to think of happy thoughts.

~~~~
Two hours had passed when I awoke. Zara smiled at me. "Wake up, sleepy demon", she said. I stared at myself; I saw three horns on my head. "I have horns", I gasped. "Maybe it was because you're going through puberty", she told me. "Yes, but horns", I said. I gasped. David shook his head. "You're a fire demon, Marjorie; you're a...". "I know that, David", I said irritably. And, after I stared at a black mirror that was near the old fireplace, I saw my face. It was a red colour. I was burning. "I need water", I said. Zara ignored what I said. "You need fire water, Marjorie", she said. April poured a glass of fire water. And, as I drank it, my red, scorched, throat was back to normal. I gazed at Zara. "Thank you, Zara". She smiled at me. "No worries, dear". David was too shocked for words. He knew about the horns that demons wore on their heads. "I only read about them in books", he said. He shook his head, and ordered some water for himself.
~~~~

Time stood still. I awoke in the early afternoon. The red colours of Hell burned me. Raging flames burst through the black fire; the grey grilles protected them from damage. I walked towards the bar. "Nice sleep, Marjorie?", April asked me. "Yes, I feel like I could do something about being a teenage demon, but I can't". I looked at myself in the mirror; I was taller. And I had begun to feel bad now. Was I yelling at people for no reason? Or was I insane? No; no, I was staring at my body differently now. I had small breasts. And, after I became used to becoming a demon girl, I looked at the fire. "You're changed", Zara said. "Of course I am", I said. And I knew that I was a teenager.

~~~~
David was hungry. He started to blush as he saw me. "It's hormones", I said. He shook his head. "Of course", he said. He walked towards me. "It looks like I won't be a demon hunter after all", he sighed. I smiled at him. "You're a demon hunter, David; you're a hunter who'll be famous". He wasn't going to be thwarted. I wanted to talk to him again when there was a loud knock on the back door. April left the bar, then she opened the door. Two dark elves were bowing. "We have a human girl here, April. Her name's Rowena Franks". David stared at them. He walked near them. "How much is it for her release?", David asked them. "Twenty gold coins", the dark elf answered him. David saw her. She had long, black hair, hazel eyes, and petite. She wore a red gown. And was barefoot. "I'll pay for her once I kill a demon", David said. The dark elf nodded. "Ah, a human hunter who hates demons. I'm Ralph Geer, leader of the Dark Elves of Hell". I stared at them. "David", he said. And then he left the tavern...and begun to hunt demons.
~~~~

The tavern was near the ancient dark woods. David was concerned that he'd fail. He stared at the elves. Their green eyes gleamed in mischief; their pointy ears heard his footsteps. "Halt!", one of them said. David obeyed, as he stared at them. "I'm looking for a Fire Demon", he said. The lead elf gripped its old staff in his left hand; he gripped his greying beard, as if trained in deep thought. "They're at Demon's Cross, lad". David nodded. "And where is it?", he asked him. "Deeper than here, lad. Over there by The Blackened Woods are", the elf answered. David saw the elf point with his right hand towards the mountains. "Over there...", David said. "Yes, lad; over there", the elf said. And he smiled...and let the young demon hunter alone on his quest.

~~~~
The Blackened Woods's entrance was guarded by two wolves. David gripped his grey sword in his right hand; the sharp blade was fashioned by Amos Drain, a sword maker of note in Louisiana. The old man was seventy, and still had his faculties. He had paid two hundred dollars for it. He thought that being a demon hunter was just a fantasy; a sense of the unreal that never happened to bare. In short, he was between worlds now. The human world, and Hell itself. David didn't know how he entered Hell itself. He was playing with his sword when he saw two wolves near the campgrounds. He had fought them in a battle that almost caused him to die. He fought them with all of his strength; he fought until they'd had died. Once the battle had ended, he had seen two bags of gold. Inside one of the bags was The Demon's Cross. It was made of pure gold. "My God, it's horrible...yet fascinating". He hadn't imagined that it would be enough money to pay for Rowena Frank's release. He had wanted to keep his prize a secret; he wanted to think that the nightmare was over. He shook his head. Take the bag; take the bag; take the bag, he thought to himself. Then he took The Demon's Cross out. He grabbed it in his right hand. Then he was about to go back to the Demon's Mark Tavern when a young girl dressed in a drab red gown was crying. He stopped what he was doing. He looked around. She was all alone. She had an iron chain across her left hand; she saw a black key was near him. "Please, Sir! Help me! I was arrested for being a demon...and I need your help. Please!", she said, pleadingly. David stared at her blue eyes. She's not unclean; she's not a demon, he thought to himself. He placed the sword onto the soft, black ground. He grabbed the key, and unlocked the chain. The girl smiled, and put her right hand on David's cheek. "I'm Stacie Eve Harris, a demoness". And it grinned demonically, and made sure David would be cursed forever.
~~~~

I watched David knocking on the front door of the tavern. "What's the matter, David?", I asked him. "I saw a demoness in the Blackened Woods. Her name was Stacie Eve Harris, a demoness. She tricked me after I rescued her from chian that was on her hand; I am cursed now after she touched me. I need a bath". I nodded. April grabbed him. "Come with me, David. I'll post extra guards around the tavern tonight". David smiled at me. Zara's face was ashen. "I knew her. The Demoness is a trickster". And I nodded, as darkness fell upon the tavern.

~~~~
"What's the matter, dear?", Dee asked me.
"It's David. He'll be a demon now", I answered her. She nodded. I felt sorry for him. Then, by six-thirty PM, I sensed that David would change like I did. But, for now, I was hungry. I walked to the bar. "Can I have some stew, please April?", I said. And she nodded. I gave her three gold coins, and I ate in silence, as the story about the demon hunter's attack spread like a wildfire inside the tavern.
~~~~

David washed his body, arms, and legs in the bath. He cleaned all of the grime off; he relaxed, as he remembered thinking that he was saving the girl. But she was a trickster; she was a demoness. She touched me; she touched me; she touched me...,, he thought to himself. His eyes burned. Suddenly he stared into the glass mirror. His eyes were black; his face were demonic. David gasped as he cried. Five minutes' later, he turned back to his former self; he stared at the red pyjamas that lay on the black carpet. He pulled the plug out with his right hand. He then got out of the bath, then he dried himself with a white towel. Once he was dressed, David opened the bathroom door. His right hand scorched the door. Then he walked downstairs to the warm fireplace...and met everyone there.

~~~~
"Here's the Demon Cross, David. It'll protect you", April said. He grabbed the amulet, and put it across his neck. "It'll prevent you from burning", she said. He nodded, Ralph Geer was sipping dark ale. Rowena Franks stared at David with concern. "You're a hybrid", she said  "Yes, but I don't have enough gold coins to free you". Rowena nodded. Zara sighed. If I give you the gold, David, then you'll be in my servant". And he nodded. And he knew what he needed to do before he turned back into a human.
