10. The Finale

I stand in front of a huge crowd of about a hundred thousand important people. I know the whole world is looking on and watching as their celebrity doctor describes her life and the moments leading up to her finding the cure. Everyone I ever loved sits in the audience. All the people who were ever mean to me were watching. I clear my throat and smooth down my new blue dress. I out my hair into place and adjust my glasses. I get up from my chair and stand at the podium.

“36 years ago, there was a woman named Rebecca Mader Maguire, the wife of Sean Maguire. She was a cancer researcher. Her dream was to cure cancer and she cured her own cancer. She found out she had cancer just days before she found out she was carrying a child. That child was me. My mother’s whole life was centered around curing cancer and around having her daughter that one day she would name Mikayla Dawn. My mother died when I was six, when I was four I forced her to take a cancer drug that would give her a little bit of life. She lasted six years with cancer and she never once took any medicine except that pill.’

‘When I was four and my mother lay dying in the hospital I vowed I would cure cancer. I vowed I would find the cure for cancer. Not A cure but THE Cure. See there’s a difference between the articles I’m using. For my accomplishment, I would like to thank God for helping me, I didn’t find the cure, he found it and gave it to me. I would like to thank my mother, my father, my aunt Lana who’s not really my aunt but is my stepmother. I would like to thank my friends, my teachers, my enemies, I would like to thank my husband and my daughter. Lilly you were the hope that helped me fight through my struggles and Cameron you supported me from the day you met me. I’ve only been out of school for six years. I would like to thank my sister and my lab partners. Thank you all for being so supportive of me. I would like to thank past researchers for never being able to find the cure so that I might find it. I want to thank the cancer patients, they are the real heroes, they fought, they struggled, they gave their lives. It’s about time they received a little help. Thank you and good night”

I step down from the podium and leave. I hear clapping and cheering. I hear the chanting of my name. I ignore it, my family was more important. I accomplished my greatest dream, now all I had to do was live my life.
