Younger and Way Less Lucky: If You Can't See Where it Keeps It's Brain

Book One in the Younger and Way Less Lucky series
Let's say, just for a minute, that Lily had given birth to a second child just before she was murdered. Let's say, just for a minute, that Harry had a younger sister, Rose.
Rose Lily Potter is the younger sister of Harry Potter. Born on June 30, 1981, she is almost exactly a year younger than Harry, and in the same year as Ginny Weasley and Luna Lovegood, and has Severus Snape as a godfather. The two children live with Sirius Black, with both Severus and Remus as frequent visitors. Rose's first year is much more traumatic than Harry's was, but, as the leader of the Silver Trio, she and her friends will make it work.

5. Chapter Five

"Potter, Rosaline!" McGonagall finally said Rose's name.

"Good luck!" Ginny hissed, as Rose walked up to the stool.

The hat dropped down, over my eyes. Soon, a voice was talking in my ear.

Difficult, very difficult, much like your brother. Plenty of courage, obviously, not a bad mind... A thirst to prove yourself... my my, you are much like your brother, aren't you? Of course, you want to prove yourself for a different reason... With the Boy Who Lived as your only relative, you must feel overshadowed a lot, don't you?

Rose mentally glared at the hat. She did not like anything knowing all her thoughts.

"Just tell me where to go already." she hissed.

Pushy, too, I see. Very well, I suppose it had better be...

"GRYFFINDOR!" the hat yelled the last word to the entire hall. I wanted to sit with Harry, but I couldn't find him, so I settled for sitting next to Fred and George. Ginny soon joined us, and the feast began.

"We're both in Gryffindor!" Rose squealed excitedly. "We get to share a room!"

Ginny didn't even smile. "Rose, where are Harry and Ron?"

Rose's smile dropped. "I don't know." she admitted. "But we'll find them, don't worry."

Rose watched the high table, and saw Filch hurry up to it. Dumbledore and McGonagall left their seats. Severus wasn't there to begin with. Soon enough, all three teachers showed up, and the students were sent off to bed.

The story travelled quickly enough. Harry and Ron had stolen the Weasley's flying car, and flew it to Hogwarts. The moment the boys got to Gryffindor tower, the rest of the house started cheering. Rose and Ginny, however, stood side-by-side, looking like twins. They looked rather menacing. (AN: See the picture at the top of the page. Imagine them a bit younger.)

"You two are such idiots." Rose said, smacking Harry. "What on earth made you think that stealing a flying car was a good idea?"

"We couldn't get through the barrier!" Harry said. "It wouldn't let us through, so we took the car!"

"Do you realize how mad Mum and Dad are going to be?" Ginny was saying to Ron. "They're going to kill you!"

Ron gulped.

The next morning, Rose and Ginny sat next to Harry and Ron, and their friend they hadn't met before, Hermione. When the post came, both boys looked up and choked.

Hedwig and Errol were flying towards them, blood-red envelopes tied around their legs.

"It'll be worse if you don't open it." Rose commented, calmly spreading butter on a piece of toast.

Ron's began to smoke first, so he opened it.

Molly's voice, magically magnified, echoed throughout the hall.

"— STEALING THE CAR, I WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN SURPRISED IF THEY'D EXPELLED YOU, YOU WAIT TILL I GET HOLD OF YOU, I DON'T SUPPOSE YOU STOPPED TO THINK WHAT YOUR FATHER AND I WENT THROUGH WHEN WE SAW IT WAS GONE —"

Rose and Ginny were both doing their best to hold in their laughter.

"— FROM DUMBLEDORE LAST NIGHT, I THOUGHT YOUR FATHER WOULD DIE OF SHAME, WE DIDN'T BRING YOU UP TO BEHAVE LIKE THIS, YOU AND HARRY COULD BOTH HAVE DIED —"

Harry seemed to shrink into his seat, looking embarrassed.

"— ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED — YOUR FATHER'S FACING AN INQUIRY AT WORK, IT'S ENTIRELY YOUR FAULT AND IF YOU PUT ANOTHER TOE OUT OF LINE WE'LL BRING YOU STRAIGHT BACK HOME."

"Well, you did break the rules." Rose commented.

"Shut it." Harry snapped, opening the one from Sirius.

"HARRY JAMES POTTER, THAT WAS BLOODY BRILLIANT." Sirius's voice echoed throughout the hall, occasionally interrupted by Remus. "REALLY THOUGH, I'M NOT EVEN MAD. (SIRIUS, NO!) MOONY, WHY DIDN'T WE EVER THINK OF THAT? (SIRIUS, WE ARE NOT ENCOURAGING THIS!) OKAY, YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE THAT, AND I HOPE MCGONAGALL WASN'T TOO MAD, IT'S A GOOD THING SHE DIDN'T EXPEL YOU, BUT REALLY! THAT WAS AMAZING! (SIRIUS, SHUT UP NOW!) BE QUIET MOONY, THIS BOY IS THE HEIR OF TROUBLE-MAKING!"

The letter burst into flames and fell onto the table. Rose and Ginny were laughing harder than ever, Hermione looked disapproving, Harry was grinning sheepishly, and Ron looked mad.

"I hate you Harry." he muttered, returning to his cornflakes.

"No you don't." Harry said, grinning. "Come on, you had to know Padfoot was going to do that."

Rose slopped half her drink down her front.
