The Red Scarf : Poetry Novella

“But . . . but Mummy would never leave”
“If she could have stopped it, I know she would have Hannah”
“No . . . NO! I refuse to believe Mummy did that”
“Hannah, please, you need to understand, she couldn’t have stopped it”
I wanted her to come back
I wanted it all to be one bad dream
I just wanted to wake up from it and run back into her arms

But all I could do was keep sleeping

6. another place

My grandparents had always told me

“Hannah, Mummy has gone to . . . another place”

“But why wouldn’t Mummy take me with her?”

I never knew where she had gone

I never knew what they meant

Where did she go to? Why didn’t she take me?

So I searched, I searched everywhere I could

But

. . . I could never find that “other place”

I know now that they wanted to leave me with something

A vain string of hope she hadn’t moved on

That she hadn’t been lost and passed on to another life

But I could hear it in their voices

They knew where she'd gone

And deep inside, I knew it too

I knew that she couldn't come back from there . . .

But I still refused
