“It’s especially lovely out for another autumn day wouldn’t you say so Duchess?”

My primary lady in waiting and professional best friend, Julietta glides with me along the sunny terrain. The crinoline underneath my olive green gown was beginning to itch my legs insatiably. I couldn't complain too much, at least I was allowed a short sleeve dress in this inexplicable heat as opposed to what my lady was clothed in. She sported a red and black chiffon satin frock that must have weighed at least fifteen extra pounds.

“How many times have I asked you to call me by my first name?” I nudge her elbow slightly as we continue in our strides.

She has been my employee for almost a year now ever since I took her in under my wing at the palace. We’ve known each other much longer but this year was the first that I had any say in the lives of the civilians of Edinburgh. As my official coronation for Duchess was approaching upon my eighteenth birthday, I was able to amend some of my royal duties. The first thing I saw to was that Julietta had a proper roof over her head. She led an unfortunate life as an orphan for far too many years and from the moment I met her I vowed that I would do everything in my power to save her from that horrible fate.

Sadly, the only way that I could do that was to appoint her as my lady in waiting, which is just a glorified version of a servant.

She places her handkerchief to her forehead, wiping away her beads of sweat. “Miss, we are in public,” she whispers so that only I can hear.

“No matter, I refuse to let people believe that I have a higher standing than you do. If there’s one thing this world needs to learn, it is that we are all equal in one way or another,” I speak the words confidently even though I do not believe them to be true for my land. As much as I wish that I could change the way people thought about the monarchy, the serfs and the peasants, I know that it was out of my hands. They would have to be willing to change and see from other’s points of views I could not force it upon them.

“I’m sorry miss but you know that I must obey him. At least until your throning,” she added the last part hesitantly. The ‘him’ she was referring to was my father and because he was older and a man, his word was still dominant over mine.

“Very well. Though the instant that I accept the title, we are moving your suite next to mine and we will have sleepovers every night!” I smiled widely and bounced next to her to show my excitement. The second that I did I wished that I hadn’t, I nearly knocked the parasol out of her frail hands in the process. The action earned me a stern glare from the soldiers behind us as I mouthed a mere ‘sorry’ towards their direction.

The lack of privacy that came with the title was yet another thing that I was not looking forward to. I was watched enough already as it were, but now that I'm coming into the position officially I can say goodbye to any moment that I had alone.

Julietta’s giggle subsided too quickly, as I watched her strong features mimic a frown. In another hushed tone she mutters, “Oh, Duchess I fear that will be inappropriate considering . . . you know.

I groan the instant I realize what she is talking about. The only way that I am able to fulfill my duty as Duchess is if I accept a fitting suitor. I had spent hours upon hours in the study, researching for any kind of sustenance that would convince my father I could rule perfectly fine without a husband at my side. The night that I had begged for mercy from this obligation, my father confessed that the sole reason for my birth was to bring piece between England and Ireland. And the only way to do that was to create an allegiance with an upstanding nobleman of the country as soon as I came of age. Alas, I was at a crossroads; I hated the way this had to be, but I was in no position to fight it. I was born into this life, it was chosen for me and there was nothing I could do to change it.

“Here we are, miss. Are you excited?” Julietta asks with a hopeful gleam in her deep hazel eyes. She had a certain wit about her, a need to constantly make the best out of every situation, even an ill fated one. I didn't blame her, her parents had left her for dead when she was only three years old so she constantly had to fend for herself even when in the orphanage. The only way she made it through was the hope and promise of a better life in the future.

As I glanced at the royal wedding dress shoppe before us, I was overcome with misery and fear. Now that we were really here for my fitting, there was no escaping it. I was to be married tomorrow to Lieutenant Niall Horan, naval officer of the Irish Sea.
