1. Prologue

A young man sighs as he approaches his home.

He hadn't been here since he was fifteen. He ran away to his best friend's house and fully intended to leave this place behind him.

But his little brother brought him back.

He stands on the porch for a long time, a hand firmly on the knocker, remembering his late brother.

"Oh Regulus." He sighs, tears coming to his eyes.

He shakes his head and knocks three times, letting the snake fall back onto the wood.

There is muffled screaming and cursing on the other side of the door, causing the man to grimace.

The door opens and reveals a haggard woman with grey hair streaked with black.

Her eyes, once sharp and gleaming with distaste, are now hallow and sunken.

"Hello mother." He says.

"Sirius..." The woman gasps.

From somewhere in the house a baby screams.

"You sent for me?" He sighs.

"I did no such thing!" She says indignantly.

"Mother believe me, I do not wish to be hear any more than you wish for me to be." He says, pinching the bridge of his nose.

"It's the child, take her, I can't!" His mother suddenly screams.

He jumps back in terror as his mother falls towards him.

"Mother, what are you talking about? What child, who's child?" He asks, lifting her erect and escorting her inside.

The scream of the baby comes again, and the man looks towards the noise, concerned.

"Take it!" His mother wails, clutching his arm as she slides to the floor in a fit of madness.

The man cautiously makes his way towards the cries of the child, and stops dead in the doorway of the drawing room.

Underneath an overturned table is a young baby.

"Oh no!" He gasps, lifting the table and scooping the child into his arms.

He holds the child to his chest and caresses its head.

The cries cease, and wide blue eyes stare at him.

"Hello there." He says, smiling down to it.

"Mother?" He asks the wailing woman on the floor.

"Leave! I cannot bear to see my granddaughter any longer!" She screams, scratching at his legs.

Sirius clutches the child tightly to his chest and steps away from his mother.

"Leave!" She wails.

Sirius looks with pity down at the sprawled form of his mother, sighs, and leaves the house.

He pulls out his phone out of his pocket and flips it open with a flick of his wrist.

"Yeah, Lils. I need your help." He says.

"Yeah, I'll be there soon." He sighs, shoving the phone back in his pocket and wrapping his scarf around the child in his arms.
