Amber

A few weeks ago, I met somebody.

Not a romantic partner, obviously, I'm with Dominic. But I met a friend. I was sat in bed, scrolling Instagram when I came across an internet friend finder page. You send in an application with basic information, they post it, and someone elsewhere in the world decides to message you and become your friend. I looked through some applications, but only a few people were my age, and most of them couldn't talk English. That's when I decided to write an application myself:

Hi! My name is Amber. I'm 15 years old, turning 16 next month! I go to a boarding school in England. I'm obsessed with One Direction (cried when they split) and 5 Seconds of Summer, who I got to see live a few weeks ago! I have a boyfriend and two best friends. I'm pretty open-minded, I'll accept you for who you are☺️ would like someone around my age too😋

I attached a photo of myself and sent the application. Before I knew it, it was posted and I had 3 or 4 people inboxing me. Only one lasted for more than two days. Her name is Katrina Nutt. She lives down in London. We've been talking ever since. I found out she also loves 5SOS, and that she went to see them live in London a few months ago! We spent a while fangirling, and I found out her favourite member is Luke Hemmings.

Yesterday, we tried to videocall. I felt so excited. After lessons, I raced to my room and turned on my laptop. I pulled up Skype, typed in my email and my password, and added Kat. Her call came through, and I clicked accept. All I could see was a white wall, a black screen, and then the call ended. I checked my wifi signal bars. There was no wifi. Laine came rushing into the room, hitting her fingers on her phone. "The wifi has gone!"

"My wifi has gone too," I cried.

"I just got a text from Suki. The wifi has shut down, the power grid in the area for wifi has gone. Great. No wifi," she complained as she shoved her phone in her pocket.

I couldn't quite believe it. I was so excited to finally Skype Kat, and the goddamn wifi switches off! I sent her a quick text and told her that the wifi at Estal was down, and she told me she saw my confused face as the power went off. I laughed about it, and then my phone signal went. "I guess the signal for phones has gone down too," I said to Laine as I tried to send another text to Kat.

Laine looked her phone. "Yep, my bars have all gone. I've got practice in the theatre soon anyway, so I'm all good."

I rolled over on my bed and looked at her. "I might collar Dom after tea and get him to keep me company."

"That sounds like a good plan."

We headed down to the hall for tea. Everyone was talking about the signals and the wifi being down. The popular girls were being all dramatic about it, which we found quite funny. Suki was sat with Lena and Cody, so we went over to join them.

"How bum is this signal situation?" Lena said, still trying to text.

Cody laughed at her. "You aren't going to get any signal by trying to text someone!"

Lena huffed at him, "I need my phone. It's vital."

"Do you have rehearsals soon Laine?" Suki asked, avoiding Lena and Cody who were sat arguing about the signal.

"Yeah, I might head down there now. See you girls," Laine said as she stood up and left.

When she left, I spotted Dom across the hall and called him over. He smiled and skipped over with his tray. "Hey baby," he said as he kissed my cheek and sat down.

"Hey darling. This signal situation is bugging me!" I said.

"Well, I'll keep you company for a bit. We can just piss about and stuff," he laughed.

"Omg I should paint your nails, or do your makeup, or dress you up like a lady!"

Dom's cheeks started turning bright red. "I guess you could."

"Ooh baby I'll make you look super cute!" I grabbed his hand and dragged him towards the dorms. Unfortunately, guys aren't allowed in the girl dorms, so I made him wait at the end of the corridor and grabbed my nail varnish and makeup. We took it all down to the fountain at the bottom of the field. Most people were taking the signal being down as a chance to get on with homework, or play sports and go to extra curricular activities. Nobody would see us, and I'd save Dom the embarrassment and wipe it all off afterwards.

I did his makeup first. I blended my foundation into his skin. "Now you look like a pale ghost," I laughed, as Dom has darker skin than me. Next I did contour, highlighter and blush, followed by eyeliner, a nice smokey eye and some false eyelashes. "Damn Dom, you make a pretty hot girl."

Dom smiled. It was a really warm, happy smile. It was almost like he hadn't felt so happy in a long, long time. "Nails next Ambs. Cute and glittery?"

"Like a princess?! Sure!" I took out my favourite blue glitter nail varnish and applied the first coat. It dried in no time, so I applied the second. Whilst we were waiting for them to dry for the final coat, I dug out some nail stickers. I applied the third coat, followed by some glitzy nail stickers.

Dom admired his new manicure, "you've done the best job!"

I laughed. "We can take it all off now, if you want."

"I'll keep it on for a bit. I really like it. We can just stay here until it gets dark, can't we?" We sat together as the sun started setting. I linked my arm through Dom's and rested my head against his shoulder. "You love me, don't you Amber? Like no matter what, you'll always love me?"

I thought for a moment. "Of course Dom, you're my boyfriend, of course I'll always love you."

"You see, that's the thing-"

Dom started talking, but my phone started buzzing before he could finish his sentence. I took my phone out. "We've got signal! Come on, I think we best go inside now! Let's get this makeup off!" I took wipes from my bag and started wiping his face gently until all the makeup came off. "Sorry I interrupted you, what were you going to say?"

Dom laughed nervously. "It doesn't matter." I finished taking off the makeup and reached for the nail polish remover. "I'm going to keep the nail varnish on. I like it."

I tucked the polish back away, "fair enough." I leaned to kiss his cheek, "I'll see you later!"

And with that, I skipped off. My mind filled with so many thoughts. What did Dom want to say?
