3. Sirius and Severus

"So, ready to go down and meet Remus?" James asked. "It's been nearly half an hour, he must have transformed by now, and the teachers can't still be there."

"Remus isn't the only one we'll be meeting." Sirius said, smirking.

"What do you mean?" James asked slowly. "Who else would be down there?"

"Just Snivellus." Sirius shrugged. "He kept nosing about where Remus went, so I nudged him towards the Whomping Willow."

"You did WHAT?" James shouted, leaping to his feet. "Sirius, you complete and total idiot! Remus could bite him, or kill him!"

"James," Sirius said, also standing up, but James had already sprinted out of the common room, leaving Sirius and Peter behind. Peter looked nervously at Sirius, and both agreed silently to not follow.

James sprinted as fast as he could down to the Whomping Willow, enchanted a stick to prod the knot, and ran through the passage as fast as he could. He came across Severus near the end, moving slowly, staring at Remus, who was too large to fit through the passage, but was trying to get to Severus.

"Severus, come on!" James yelled over the snaps and snarls.

When Severus failed to move, James grabbed his arm and dragged him out of the passage and onto the grounds. As they emerged from the tunnel, they saw Dumbledore striding across the grounds.

"Boys, you'll need to come with me." he said, and the three of them walked up to Dumbledore's office; James was hot, sweaty, and out-of-breath, and Severus was pale-faced and angry.

"Acid Pops." Dumbledore said to the griffin, which spun around to admit them.

"Sit down." Dumbledore invited.

The boys sat.

"Mr. Black has just been here to inform me that Severus had discovered the passage down to where Mr. Lupin goes to... cope with his affliction." Dumbledore began slowly. "Severus, I must insist that you tell nobody, not even Miss Evans, what you saw. Nobody can know. Do you understand me?"

"Yes, sir." Severus said, staring at the ground.

"I understand that you did not know what you were going into." Dumbledore said. "I do not hold you accountable for that. However, you were out in the grounds after dark, so you will still recieve detention."

"Yes, sir." Severus repeated, not looking up.

"You best get off to bed then." Dumbledore said. "I would like a word with Mr. Potter."

Severus left.

"Mr. Potter, Mr. Black assured me that you had no part in what happened." Dumbledore said. "And I thank you for rushing to Mr. Snape's aid. However, you were also out of bed after hours, and will join him in detention."

"Yes, sir." James said quietly.

"That is all." Dumbledore said. "Off you go."

James hurried out of Dumbledore's office, to find Sirius waiting in the corridor. James spared him one glance before stalking away.

"James," Sirius hurried to catch up. "James, listen to me."

James didn't so much as look at Sirius, striding as quickly as he could back to his dorm, where he changed and got into bed, still ignoring Sirius.

"James," Sirius tried again, but James yanked the curtains around his bed shut, and went to sleep.

The next morning, Remus entered the common room just as James and Sirius hurried down the spiral staircase. Sirius appeared to be pleading with him, while James was stubbornly ignoring him.

"James, come on, listen to me!" Sirius said desperately.

James pulled his homework out of his bag and opened a book.

"James, listen!" Sirius pleaded. "It was just a joke, it was only-"

"ONLY A JOKE?" James bellowed. It seemed that he'd given up on the silent treatment.

Peter, who had just come down the stairs, and Remus, who had walked over to him, both jumped and shrank back. They had never heard James yell like this at anyone, much less at Sirius.

"Yes!" Sirius said, looking as though James had slapped him across the face. "James, I didn't mean for anything to happen-"

"WHAT DID YOU THINK WOULD HAPPEN?" James roared. He was sure to wake others, but at this point, he found he didn't care. "DID YOU THINK SNAPE WOULD GET DOWN THERE AND HAVE A LITTLE MUSEUM TOUR, BEFORE SKIPPING OFF TO BED? ARE YOU SERIOUS?"

"Er-" Sirius began, but was cut off.

"DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT MAKING THAT JOKE, SIRIUS BLACK! YOU COULD HAVE GOTTEN SNAPE KILLED, OR BITTEN, OR, OR, I DON'T EVEN KNOW! YOU COULD HAVE SERIOUSLY HURT HIM!" James was bellowing so loudly, Remus thought that the entire school must be able to hear him. "THAT WAS THE STUPIDEST, MOST IDIOTIC THINK YOU COULD HAVE DONE!"

"James, I didn't think-" Sirius was once again cut off.

"YOU DIDN'T THINK?" James looked incredulous. "OBVIOUSLY YOU DIDN'T THINK, OR EVEN YOU WOULD HAVE REALIZED WHAT A DUMB THING TO DO THAT WAS! YOU ARE SO LUCKY BOTH OF US HAVEN'T BEEN EXPELLED! THANKS TO YOU, SNAPE NOW KNOWS WHERE REMUS GOES EVERY MONTH! EVEN IF DUMBLEDORE TOLD HIM NOT TO TELL, DO YOU THINK HE'LL LISTEN? WHO CARES WHAT COULD'VE HAPPENED TO THE TWO OF US AT THIS POINT, WHO CARES IF WE WOULD'VE BEEN EXPELLED? YOU COULD HAVE RUINED REMUS'S LIFE, SIRIUS! BUT DID YOU THINK? NO! DID YOU EVEN CARE? WHO KNOWS! I CAN HARDLY STAND TO LOOK AT YOU RIGHT NOW!"

"James!" Remus intervened. "James, what the heck is going on?"

"This idiot," James's tone was ice cold, but at least he wasn't yelling anymore. "Thought it would be a good idea to tell Snape that if he touched a certain knot on the Whomping Willow, he would find a secret passage, and it would lead him to where you go every month!"

"What?" Remus asked, turning to stare at Sirius. "Sirius, do you realize what that could have done?"

"Yes, I do, thank you very much." Sirius snapped.

"Don't you start on him!" James rounded on Sirius. "It's your own fault we have detention, it's your own fault you're being chewed out, none of this has anything to do with him!"

James sank back into the chair. "Everyone go away, I've got homework to do."

Sirius didn't dare contradict James right now, didn't dare speak again, even though he feared he may have just lost his best mate forever.

So I know I said I'd do something happier next... clearly I didn't. Oh well. Maybe next time?
