Twisted Thoughts

Cassie was a normal girl, with a normal life. Well, that was until Matt unexpectedly popped into her life to help her solve a mystery with more than one can of worms. •Thanks to everyone who reads my stories!•

Here we are, slinking down into the rough subway seats. My mind is running wild trying to figure out what had just happened.

"Hey." Matt whispers, still out of breath.

"What?" I annoyingly mutter. My eyes roll to the edge of the universe letting him know that I'm not in the mood.

"Are you okay?" He asks, obviously not taking the hint. I cross my arms and continue to close my eyes, I guess this time it worked because he finally stopped talking to me.

As the subway gradually eases it's way to our stop, I open my eyes and get prepared to leave. My backpack is layered in dried muck from earlier, and so is my messy black hair. I wonder what everyone thought about us when we boarded the bus, surely they weren't good thoughts.

"Cassie." Matt speaks out, trying to get my attention as we walk into the crowded streets of New York.

"Yeah?" I bluntly ask.

"I'm really sorry we didn't find it." As he says this his face instantly saddens.

I let my eyes wander his face for a moment. How could someone I had only met twenty-four hours ago feel such strong emotions for me?

"It's ok." It's really not, but I don't want to make him feel even worse than he already does. "It wasn't your fault." I smile up at him, well I wouldn't really call it a smile.

"Thanks, I'll walk you home." He says and then he resumes to walk through the bustling streets.

Twenty-four hours ago, if you told me that a tall handsome stranger would be walking me home or that I would come home layered in crusty mud, I would have told you, you were a lunatic. Now though, not much will surprise me anymore after this deranged day.

"Well, here we are." He awkwardly says while gazing down at his shoes. A chill runs through the air causing me to shiver.

"I guess I'll see you tomorrow?" I ask. He shoves his hands into his pockets and turns his gaze upon me.

"Yeah." I can tell he seems nervous, but why?

"Bye." I wave, and then shuffle into my apartment door. I kick off my shoes and run into my laundry area to clean my mucky clothes. As I leave the room to get ready for bed, something catches my eye. After pushing over my hamper a little, I pick up a small booklet. Our plan, I read in my head. A piercing shiver runs up my spine as I read the first page, this book is about me. My vision blurs and I can no longer think straight, someone's been inside my house.
