“No, I came in last night after dropping your mam and dad off then went to my parents and told them then I just went home to bed. I drank nearly half a bottle of whiskey. It knocked me out and I was able to sleep until just after five.’

“What about you did you wake up during the night?’

“No, whatever they gave me must have kept me asleep.’

Albert stayed chatting to Laura until the enema had done its job and Albert went tearing down the corridor to get the Sister and the Nurse.

He was now hungry and the smell of food being carried around the ward made him feel even hungrier.

He spoke to a porter who told him there was a canteen where he could get a breakfast at a reasonable cost.

He followed the directions that he’d been given and he eventually found it.

He ate a full English breakfast followed by three cups of tea and sat back feeling better.

Walking back he passed a shop. He went in and bought some women’s magazines for Laura to read and a morning paper. If he was going to be there most of the day then he didn’t want to feel bored especially when he was kept away from his wife whilst they changed her dressings or the doctor came around.

It was just after one when his mam and dad arrived and Albert pulled up a couple of chairs. Jack sat whilst Nelly took some fruit out of her bag along with a fruit bowl and proceeded to fill it. Then brought out some Robinsons barley water. Have the nurses not put your flowers into a vase. They won’t last five minutes if they are not put into water with a bit of sugar. She picked up the bunch and walked towards the reception.

“How are you then Laura asked Jack?’

“I’m pretty sore Jack as you can imagine but Albert and I have come to a decision haven’t we?’

“Albert looked at Laura and said yes we have dad.’ Laura wants to adopt a baby.’

“Don’t you think it’s a bit soon to be thinking about adoption so soon after you know…

“You can say it Jack, you mean after losing my child.’ Well I’ve thought about nothing else since the young nurse mentioned it and if I cannot have a baby of my own then I will adopt one.’

Nelly returned with the vase of flowers. “There you are Laura aren’t they lovely?’

Laura has just been saying that she and Albert are going to adopt a child.’

“It’s far too soon dear; you should give it some thought.’

“I’m never going to have a child of my own Nelly you know that and Albert and I have a lot of love that we can give a child. We are going to make enquires as soon as possible.’

“Do you know what the criteria is for adoption?’

“Adoption who’s adopting said Elizabeth who had just waked in and was dolled up to the nines.’

“We are mother.’ Albert and I are going to adopt a baby and bring it up as if it were our own.’
