Hello I’m Mr Robert Black the Hospital’s Gynaecologist are you a relative of the girl.

“Yes,’ I’m her father.’ Charles Millsap can you tell us anything?’

Your daughter suffered what is medically know as a spontaneous abortion.’

“But my daughter wanted a child.’

“What I mean is Laura had a miscarriage. It was lucky that someone went to the lavatory and found your daughter or she may have died as a result of a haemorrhage. We have stemmed the bleeding but I’m afraid as you already know she lost the child. It died of trauma shortly after we performed an emergency Hysterectomy. I’m extremely sorry.’

Charlie’s tears fell down his face as he realised that his daughter would never bare children.  He asked if the child was a boy and the doctor nodded.

Just then Albert came rushing through the doors.

“Where’s Laura is she alright?’

“Yes son she is fine,’ she’s in good hands.’

“Can I see her?’

“You had better wait son, I have something to tell you.’

When Charlie told him the news he too broke down. Charlie took him in his arms and held him.’

“I’m sorry son I really am, but you must be strong now for Laura. She will need you more now than ever before.’

“Will we ever be able to have children together?’

“No son, I’m afraid a hysterectomy means she will never be able to have children herself.’

The doctor told him that Laura was to do no lifting or bending for at least six months.

“She will not be able to work for at least a month and even then it must be light.’ What does your wife do exactly asked Mr Black?’

“She works in the perfumery in Marks and Spencer’s.’

“That is fine as long as she can sit down when she needs to.’

“I will ring her boss tomorrow and explain.’

“Do you have any holiday entitlement Mr Kinnear, if so, I would suggest that you take it as your wife will not be allowed up for at least a week after we discharge her from here in seven days’ time. She needs complete rest do you understand?’

“Yes doctor.’

The doctor put his hand on Albert’s shoulder and said that he was sorry that he could not save his son. “It was a choice I had to make. It was either the life of the child or your wife. We tried to save them both we really did, but in the end the trauma was too much for the little one and he died.’ Now either you can break the news to your wife or I can.’

“I will do it Doctor, thank you.’
