90. 90

David and Cassie thanked both Colleen and Apinya for a splendid evening before leaving.

They walked to a taxi rank and it took them both home where they made love under the stars in the attic that had become their bedroom.

They lay talking in the silence of the room, the night sky above them now seemed to fade into insignificance as they fell asleep in each other’s arms.

Laura Millsap Kinnear never heard the siren from the ambulance that came to take her to Newcastle General Hospital. She couldn’t remember anything apart from lifting a big heavy box.

The ambulance driver kept telling her that it was going to be alright and to stay calm and breathe in the oxygen through the mask that was being held over her mouth. The hospital wasn’t far away; it was where the vast majority of mothers gave birth in Newcastle and the surrounding areas. When asked who was her next of kin she gave her father’s name and address and telephone number.

Laura was taken straight into the emergency wing of the hospital where a team were waiting.

She had lost a lot of blood and the doctor decided to take her straight down to theatre. Laura looked on as the surgeon and the nurses were working in unison. The gas and air she had been breathing made her woozy then she felt a sharp prick in her arm then something was being inserted into her then blackness.

When Laura came around some hours later she was in another room and her father was sitting in the chair weeping. He covered his face with his hands. Then he heard his daughter’s voice.’

He wiped the tears from his face then looked down upon his daughter, his treasure, his life.’

“You are going to be fine Laura try and keep still I’ll get your mother she’s outside. Charlie Millsap got up and went outside and told the nurse that his daughter was now awake.’

“The sister came and asked if her daughter knew.’

“No I haven’t told her yet.’

“You need to tell her now Mr Millsap.’

“Yes your right,’ I will do it now.’

“Has her husband been informed?’

“He’s on his way as we speak.’

“Good she will need his support after what she has been through.’

“Can I speak with the doctor?’

“Yes, I’ll go and get him for you.’

The sister disappeared along the corridor and Charlie waited until he saw him and the sister return.
