“Yes, he sounds like a nice lad, I should like to meet him when you get to know him a little better.’

“He is, he’s ever so sweet; I’m sure you will like him dad.’

“Well I hope so Laura.’

“Now you go easy okay, don’t go rushing into things.’

“I won’t.’

Charlie got up from the bed and was about to walk away.’

“What love?’

“I love you.’

Charlie had the biggest smile on his face and said: I love you too Laura.’

“Don’t I get a kiss then daddy?’

Somehow Charlie knew things were going to be alright and that he’d not lost his daughter as he bent down and kissed his daughter’s cheek. She threw her arms around him and gave him a big hug.

“Goodnight Laura.’

“Goodnight daddy.’

Charlie went to the bathroom then washed and changed before sitting down to his dinner.

Elizabeth had made him a corned beef and onion pie with some new potatoes and cabbage and carrots he poured some gravy onto his meal then cut into the pie.

Albert Kinnear filled up the kettle placing it over the lit gas ring he popped three tea bags into a teapot then waited for the kettle to boil. His mind began to wander again back to the time when he’d taken Laura to Keswick. He didn’t expect her to come really but there she was wearing her hikers outfit and carrying a knapsack on her back. The boys started to arrive one by one; parents dropping them off by car or some turning up on the bus. Albert had his charts, a compass, and a list of the boys who were coming on the trip. He read out their names and told each one to board the bus that was parked in the car park.

Albert introduced Laura to Paul Thomson and his wife Wendy and John Gibson and his girlfriend Polly Smith. They all boarded the mini bus and the boys were getting excited so Albert told them all to calm down. Albert took Laura’s knapsack and put it in the metal rack above their heads. She sat beside him in the front as he was driving. John and Polly sat behind so they could keep an eye on the boys.

They all had their Cub Scout uniforms on and green woollen jumpers on with the scout emblem on the arm and green caps with yellow cross pattern on the top.
