Nothing was mentioned about the child that she had had with her son and what had become of it. In the next two letters Buzz expressed a sadness that Elizabeth had met and married a shipyard worker called Charles Kinnear and that she had their son named Timothy George Beurling adopted some years before.

Elizabeth had had the baby in Yorkshire so when she returned home the baby had been adopted and no one knew anything about the child. For over twenty years Elizabeth tried to forget about the son she’d given birth to until one day there was a knock on the door whilst Charlie was at work.

She opened the front door and knew straight away that it was indeed her son. He was the double of his father. They spent the whole afternoon chatting and Elizabeth told him about how she’d met and fell in love with his father. Tim asked why she’d given him up for adoption and she said that she was just eighteen and it would have brought shame to the family even though she thought his father dead. They were not married and her parents would have disapproved of sex before marriage. She never told Timothy that she now had a daughter called Laura. But did say that her husband new nothing about the fact that she had had a child adopted and asked Timothy if he would keep that fact to himself. To which he agreed. He never contacted her again after that.

Timothy tracked down his real father and settled in Toronto where he met and married a Spanish girl called Conchetta Gomez whilst on a holiday in Spain. They had three children together and they were living in Ibiza.

Timothy was working as a marine engineer when he met and fell head over heels in love with Conchetta. There was an address in Escana and Bobby made a mental note.

The next morning Bobby sat his mother down and told her everything. Laura was in shock knowing she had a half-brother and was an aunt to three of his children.

“Where is he now?’

“He lives in Escana do you want to go and see him?’

“Yes of course I do.’ He needs to know about his mother.

Laura dressed quickly and they hired a car and drove to Escana. They found a place called Laperla and looked for number 218. When they pulled outside they saw three young lads playing outside a very large house. Laura got out of the car and then Bobby the boys stopped playing when Bobby asked if Timothy Beurling lived at that address. The young lads answered in good English with a Canadian twang that Timothy was their father.

“Is he in at the moment asked Laura?’

“Yes, he’s sitting out back.’ I’ll get him for you.’

Laura’s heart was beating fast as a tall blond man walked to where Laura and Bobby were waiting.

There was a long silence as they both stood and looking at one another.

Finally Timothy spoke. “You are my sister aren’t you he said in a Canadian accent.’

Yes, replied Laura I’m Laura Millsap Kinnear. My mother was your mother too. She used the past tense and Timothy found that odd. There was tears streaming down both of their faces as Tim scooped up his sister in his arms and hugged her.

When he’d released her he asked her to come in and meet his wife.’
