When the plane landed in Ibiza Bobby took a taxi with his mother to his grans holiday home. The body had been removed and taken to the morgue. They had to go through all of her mother’s personal effects then her bank accounts. She had just been living on her State pension and had not spent any of the compensation that her father’s death had brought her. The house could be sold if she wanted to or could be used as a holiday let. Laura couldn’t contact anyone because it was the weekend there was nothing that they could do until the Monday morning. Laura asked her friends and neighbours if there was anything that they wanted belonging to her mother because she would be bagging all of her clothes and giving them to a charity shop. The weekend was spent going to the morgue. The sun over the last four years had made her mother’s body look older; her face although tanned showed every line. She was wearing one of her favourite dresses in the temporary coffin that they had provided for transportation. The mortician came in after they had been there for an hour and quietly said “They have come for your mother’s body to take it to the airport Mrs Kinnear, we cannot leave it too long because of discomposure. I do hope that you understand.’

“Yes, I understand that will be fine, please give me the details of where the body will be sent once it reaches Newcastle airport.’

Bobby asked about the costs and the mortician said that they would make out a bill whilst they waited. Her mother had taken out insurance and that covered all the costs of her own funeral and more.

However Laura was in for a shock on the Monday morning when they visited her mother’s solicitor on the island. He informed her that the holiday home and all of her money was to be left to Bobby and someone called Timothy George Beurling in her mother’s last will and testament. The Spanish lawyer said that there was no mistake when asked about the will. She was given a copy of the will to keep.

“Well then that’s our business concluded here I think said Laura straightening her dress and picking up her hand bag.’ Seems like you are a rich man now Bobby.’ But who is Timothy George Beurling?’

“Look mother I don’t want grans house or the money she left, it is rightly yours. I am only an adopted son after all.’

“Don’t say that Bobby, don’t ever say that.’ You are my son and always will be.’

“I’m sorry mother but that is the law I’m afraid. I don’t have any legal right to that house or the money.’

“That was my mother’s final insult towards me. Deep down I knew she resented me because my father favoured me over her.’ She was always jealous of me growing up. I don’t want her money or the house Bobby so do what you want with it. Maybe now you can buy your own house somewhere.’

“Yes,’ I could buy a house near you both couldn’t I.’ I saw one for sale on Glendale Avenue next to where Billy mill was.’ It looks like a nice property mother.’

“Then we shall go and have a look at it whilst we are both off. They stopped off at a café and ate something that was on the special menu.’ Bobby had a glass of red wine to go with the steak Diane.

Laura just picked at her food then pushed the plate to one side.’
