The phone rang in the office of Laura Millsap Kinnear she picked it up and the colour drained from her face.

The voice on the other end of the phone was crackled and at the point of tears as she explained that she had found her mother dead that morning.

“How did my mother die asked Laura?’

The doctor says she had a brain haemorrhage Laura said Jan Oliver her next door neighbour.

“I will make the arrangements to have her body flown back to England she will have wanted to be buried here I’m sure.’

“I will tend the house until you come over.’

“Thank you.’

Laura put down the receiver then burst into tears. Her mother had only been out of the country just over four years since the death of her father in an industrial accident. Now both of her parents were gone. She had never really been as close to her mother as she was with her father. Since his death though they had bonded better and she would ring most nights and they’d have a lengthy conversation. Laura picked up the phone and rang her son Robert at the school. She had a lengthy wait until he came to the phone.

“Hello Robert Millsap Kinnear how can I help?’

“It’s your mother Bobby.’

“What’s happened?’ Robert could sense that there was something wrong by the tone of her voice.’

“It’s your grandmother Elizabeth, they found her dead this morning.’

There was a silence and Laura waited until Robert had gathered himself.

“I am going to make the arrangements to have her body flown over so we can bury her here.’

“I’m sorry mother, was it a heart attack?

“No,’ they think she had a brain haemorrhage.’

Are you coming home, I can get time off if you want me to come over?’

No Bobby I will be alright. There’s nothing we can do here apart from ring her solicitor.’

“I can do that if you like; Look leave the number and I will ring in my lunch break.’

“Would you do that son, I don’t think I’m up to talking to solicitors just yet.’

“Does father know?’

“Not yet, I will ring him now.’

Laura gave her son the number and they said she would see him later.’

Instead of calling Albert she rang the English Embassy in Spain and asked if they could make the arrangements to have her mother’s body brought home.
