She even offered to pick him but Michael said he would just get a cab rather than drag her across town but she was insistent. Michael said that he would meet her in the foyer at 6 p.m.

He wasn’t aware of the visiting hours but Belinda assured him that it would be alright to go.

He ordered some food to be sent up to his room as he didn’t want to run the gauntlet of newspaper men and women who all wanted to interview him disturbing him. When it arrived he tipped the waiter and sat down to eat his first meal since winning the title. The belt was still in the case and Michael hadn’t looked at it since he won it. He tucked into his meal and drank three cups of strong coffee before he felt more alert and was able to take a shower, have a shave and put on some clean clothes. He didn’t know whether to dress formally or informally. Out of respect for his opponent he put on a shirt and tie and his blue jacket. He looked at himself in the mirror then heard a knock on the door. He went to answer it and saw Belinda and her son Ramos standing in the corridor.

“I hope that you do not mind but they told me I could come straight up.’

“I informed Pete the receptionist that if you came they were to send you up to my room. Please forgive the mess I’ve not long got up and had to eat in my room because I couldn’t deal with the press right now.’

You are a very modest man and a worthy champion said Ramos.

“Can I get you both something to drink, I have a full array of drinks here including champagne but as you can see it is left unopened. I have little to celebrate apart from the fact Hector is alright and will make a full recovery.’

“A coffee will be fine.’  Belinda stood by the large window of the apartment looking out onto the other buildings and the road below before saying “Hector will never fight again Michael, you know that don’t you.’

“Yes, I do. The board would never sanction another fight between us after what has happened.’

Michael took a can of coke from the mini fridge and handed it to the young boy then poured out some fresh coffee from the coffee percolator then asked if Belinda took sugar and cream.’

“Black will be fine Michael.’ Have you rang your wife to tell her you won the title from my husband?’

“No not yet; I will ring her later.’ No doubt she will have seen it on the news anyway and knowing me the way she does she knows that I would not be celebrating.

“Life goes on Michael; we will go on, Hector will make a life for himself out of boxing. There are plenty of jobs on offer as a sports pundit. He can also do radio shows and talk shows. He has more than enough money to retire and do nothing if he so chooses but I know my ex-husband he will not retire completely. He will want some involvement around boxing. It has been his life for over thirty years he will not give it up easily.’ Hector says that you should carry on; he says you can be a great champion.’

“Hector will be a hard act to follow; he has been champion for many years and has fought the very best in the world and never ducked anyone.’

“I think Hector knew that he was on borrowed time, the parties and the other things that went with it became too much of a temptation for my husband.’ “You see I’ve known all along about his infidelity and the other things in his life that brought about his demise but I still love him he is the father of my child. Please do not be like my husband; live a clean life.’
