When the bell sounded Fernandez flopped down on his stool. He was fighting more out of instinct than a man wanting to win a fight and hang onto his title. The nandrolone that he’d taken before the fight was having an effect on his kidneys and he was in some pain. He drank a fair amount of water before coming out for the next round. Manny Stewart looked on at his fighter and he knew that the title was slipping away.

“Norman was screaming at Michael. He’s going Mickey; you can do him this round he’s getting desperate try that double jab the right cross followed by the left hook. Again Michael took a sip of water then stood up as the time keeper announced that it was the tenth round. The bell sounded then Michael went to work he threw more and more punches and the champion could do nothing to respond. He was sending over some bombs in desperation but they were telegraphed.

Michael countered immediately with the double jab right cross and the left hook. At first nothing happened and Michael followed up with another left hook and Fernandez fell like a tree onto his face. He lay unmoving and the referee began the count, He gave a concerned look at the champion as he reached the count of nine, he still wasn’t moving. “Ten and you’re out” said MaCante’ then signalled for the doctor who jumped into the ring.’

Arthur McCante who summoned the doctor who was at ringside called for oxygen as Michael and the team celebrated, then the reality of the situation struck as the beaten champion lay unconscious. An ambulance was called for as the doctor was giving the boxer CPR. Michael walked over and looked down upon Hector Fernandez as the doctor fought to save his life. Three minutes had elapsed before the ambulance crew arrived. A stretched was hurried to the ringside and the body of Hector Fernandez placed upon it. The crowd were in shock as oxygen was being given to the boxer. They had a pulse but Fernandez had not regained consciousness. Michael was very concerned and refused to give an interview. The referee went through the procedure of announcing the time and the new champions name as stretcher carried Fernandez to the waiting ambulance where he was rushed to hospital.

Michael could not celebrate his victory until he knew that Hector was alright. The championship belt remained in the case. He could not bear to look at it. He showered and changed then went quietly back to the hotel when they showed the punches on the news that had floored the champion over and over.

“Turn it off shouted Michael.’

Michael sat down on the sofa as the press waited outside to interview him but Michael sent them away. He asked Norman to get him out of the hotel through the kitchen entrance and get a taxi to take him to the North well brain trauma unit.

For over twelve hours surgeons fought to save the life of the former world champion removing a blood clot from Hector Fernandez’s brain he was then placed on life support as his life hung in the balance, Michael reflected on how dangerous boxing can be. Eventually the press found out which hospital Hector Fernandez had been taken to and they saw Michael sitting outside the waiting area the camera’s kept flashing away until Michael lost his temper and began shouting abuse at them as they clamoured to get photographs of the stricken fighter.  Michael had not slept since the fight and Norman Fawcett asked him to come back to the hotel but Michael would not leave until he had more news of Hectors progress. He went to Hector’s ex-wife an apologised.
