usual reverb. The crowd all standing whooped and cheered when she was finished again she wished both fighters well and allowed Fernandez to kiss her on both cheeks. The Michael buffer took the mike and uttered the immortal words “Ladies and gentlemen and those watching around the world.’

“Let’s get ready to rumble”

Michael shuffled his feet as Arthur McCante called them to the centre of the ring and gave the final instructions.

Michael went back to his corner where Norman slapped his cheek then said “this is it Mickey, no guts no glory kidda.’

The bell sounded and Michael was out first he threw the first two punches which jabs, connecting with the second. The first was just a feeler really. Michael followed up with a right but although it connected Fernandez was moving out of range Michael was again moving in to attack when Fernandez snapped out a three punch combo which connected and had Michael covering up momentarily. Michael knew he was a fast counter puncher so he would have to watch for that. Michael cut the ring space off then pounced throwing a hook off the jab then a hook to the body.

Fernandez grinned but Michael knew that he was hurt and he threw two hard jabs to the head then hooked him in the same place. This time the pain was evident on the face of his opponent. Michael kept up the steady pressure until the end of the round.

“Well done Mickey those body punches are knacking him. Keep working his body, if he has had trouble making the weight it will tell on him in a few rounds. Dave Ritson gave Michael a drink of water before slotting his mouth piece back.

“Corner’s ten seconds said the time keeper.’

Michael stood up and looked across at Fernandez who wasn’t off his stool yet. He seemed to be taking as much time as possible before getting up.

The corner removed the seat as the bell went and again Michael was on him. This time Hector fought back. Fernandez landed a glancing blow on the top of Michael’s nose which brought a trickle of blood. Michael responded with two jabs then a right cross. The crowd were getting excited as Michael laid into the champion who was forced to cover up on the ropes. Americans love an underdog and they began to cheer his name. Michael pounded the body of the champion and Fernandez was forced to hold on. Hectors head bounced off Michael’s head it opened a small cut on the hairline as Michael ducked down after seeing it at the last second. Arthur McCante warned Fernandez for the use of his head. The crowd didn’t like it either and booed the champion. Michael worked away throwing punches from every conceivable angle. Fernandez was breathing hard as the round ended.

For the next three rounds Michael kept up the pressure Fernandez didn’t seem to have an answer. He got up on his toes and jabbed and moved but Michael just slipped them and belted Fernandez in the ribcage. By round six the crowds were sensing an upset as Hector was visibly slowing down. His punches seemed to have little power and he was fighting just out of instinct. Through rounds eight and nine Michael was getting through with solid head shots and Hector was blinking his eyes as the referee parted them momentarily but Michael was straight back in and he hit Fernandez with two good left hooks to the jaw. Again Hector tried to hold on. Michael worked his body which was now drawing grunts from the champion. Hector’s prediction of ending the fight early in the fifth round was gone and Michael was still there, stalking him and punching his ribs with solid body shots.
