yards then the fish started to take line. He let it run then finally began to retrieve line again as it slowed.

For nearly half an hour Harry fought the fish but just as he started to make ground. The fish was off again, slowly he worked the fish towards Susan who was also taking photos with a camera as the fish got near to the edge.’

Bloody hell, I’ve caught a sturgeon that’s a first for me if I can land it.’

“Keep it coming towards me said Susan as she was extending the net.’

“Got him.’ She exclaimed as the huge fish was inside the five feet across landing net. The vibrant blue grey and the white belly of the sturgeon was lifted onto the changing mat. The fish was about six feet long and had a long snout and whiskers. Its thornback appearance gave it a rather sinister kind of look as Harry unhooked it then placed it onto the weighing mat. He used two hands to lift the fish that was 62lbs and 4oz in weight. Susan clicked away with her camera then the sturgeon was returned unharmed back into the depths of the lake.

“Wow that was good said Harry. First fish and a PB to boot (Personal Best) a species I’ve never caught until now as well. Harry washed his hands in the lake and then dried them on a towel.

“That was worth all the money we paid just to come here alone.’

Susan poured him a cup of coffee from his thermos flask then gave him a quick kiss.

“Aren’t you having one?’

“No I’m going to be reeling in the biggest carp that you ever saw in a minute.’

“You might get a monster catfish; now that would be something.’

Harry chucked out more ground bait to try and encourage the fish to feed. They could see bubbles rising not far away from where there hook bait was.’

“Get ready Susan we could be both in here.’

Sure enough both alarms went off and both Susan and Harry began to put pressure on the fish after striking. We will play both fish to tire them out then I will set mine down and get yours in the net first. Well you were right about it being a carp; it shot off like a rocket up the lake.

Harry’s was again slow and solid as he tried to reel it in quickly the fish just took off and more line spun off the reel at a great rate of knots.

“Take it easy now Susan, this one looks like a bit of a lump. Harry ran for his camera and threw the strap around his neck he focussed the camera then clicked away as Susan tried to bully the fish out of the reed bed it hung there for a good ten minutes before coming out. Harry made ready with the net as Susan wound in keeping the line tight. Her arms were aching now but she couldn’t relax until the fish was safely in the net. Harry got that under the fish and scooped it up.

“You’ve got him Susan he’s in the net, well done.’

Harry brought the fish to the landing net it was a beautiful mirror carp. The unmistakable large scales along its back and orange red tail. He unhooked the fish then weighed it.

“How heavy is it asked Susan excitedly?’
