“What would you like for dinner tonight Mamma?’

“Fried Chicken, grits and greens, with some cornbread.’

“Give me a moment to wash and change and I will start dinner.’

Betty put all the shopping away then handed the pain killers to her mother who immediately popped two pills and drank some water.

“Was there any mail today mamma?’

“Yeah, I put them all on top of the ice box.’

“After changing into a pair of jeans and a tee shirt Betty walked from her room to the kitchen and picked up the pile of mail. Most of it was junk then one letter caught her eye she used a knife to open it then quickly read the letter. It was from Hanson’s law firm explaining that Devero Martin had been shot and killed accidentally by police during a robbery in San Diego.

There was possessions to be collected from the Law firm and a number had been left for her to contact them. Devero had since been buried by his cousin Timothy.’

She wasn’t sure what to do but rang the number and spoke with a woman who told her that Robert Shapiro would see her on Monday at ten o’clock.

Betty wondered why a lawyer would want to see her after Devero had made it clear that he wanted nothing more to do with her or his son.’

She started the dinner but her mind was ticking over the whole time. She never told her mother about the letter over dinner. She had told her mother that she didn’t know who the father was because she was drunk at the time. All over the weekend she thought about nothing else. On the Monday morning she set off in her uniform as normal for work so that her mother would not suspect anything but this time she drove 42 miles to San Diego.’

When she arrived she asked a woman on the street where Hanson’s was.’

“Its two blocks down then turn right.’

“Thank you said Betty then pressed the button and the window went up she drove dove the street then onto the next and turned right. Betty checked both sides of the road before seeing it and pulling up outside.

She had stopped outside a gas station on the way for petrol and changed and applied make up. She placed her uniform in the trunk and took her handbag with her.’

Betty walked calmly up to the reception and spoke to the woman on the desk.

Hello, I’m Elizabeth Richards I’m here to see Mr Shapiro.’

Hello Mrs Richards will you go right in Mr Shapiro is expecting you.’

Betty walked along the corridor to an office which had Robert Shapiro Attorney at Law on the glass door.

She knocked then waited.’

“A man appeared and he smiled.’
