“Better not get cut or I will clobber you myself.’

Over the next three weeks Michael punched the heavy bags, Skipped with a leather rope for twenty minutes without a break, he used the speedball, and he sharpened his reflexes using a top and bottom ball. The floor exercises consisted of press ups, hundreds of them, then sit ups whilst throwing a medicine ball back and forth to Dave Ritson his fitness coach. Then it was six rounds of pad work working on various scenarios that he would need to beat Hector Fernandez. They called him “The Iron Man” and he was. Hard as bloody granite said Dave as he put Michael through his paces. Fernandez had a good chin he’d never been on the canvas as an amateur or professional he was also an Olympic gold medallist with over one hundred bouts in the unpaid ranks. He quickly turned professional. He’d beaten some good fighters on his way to winning the WBC Light heavyweight title including former world champion Mate Palov with a sixth round stoppage due to a badly gashed left eye. He took the title from Michael Spinks on a split verdict. He was a frustrating fighter who rarely took chances. An excellent counter puncher Fernandez moved well. It was going to be no easy task for Michael to beat him. The only flaw he had was he was a notoriously slow starter. He usually took four rounds to get going but once he did he was virtually invincible. His jab although short for a light heavy was more like a range finder for his overhand right which was fast and explosive. Hector Fernandez had been champion for nearly three years. It had taken him only a year to win the world title and he wasn’t about to give it up. Michael Clément’s was going to have to prize it from him. Fernandez hadn’t fought for nine months. The rich living, expensive parties and excessive spending on cars and motor bikes. Had seen Fernandez’s weight shoot up from 81 KG to 130 KG. He dismissed the British challenger saying that he would dispose of him within five rounds.

He had bought a $5 million dollar mansion from actress Maureen O’Hara who was a boxing fan. The mansion in California had extensive grounds with an indoor and outdoor swimming pool. There was a fully usable gym which Hector had adapted so he didn’t have to travel to use it. There were nine guest rooms and a huge Kitchen dining room which he used when entertaining the many guests who came to the house. Hector had no concept of money and spent it as fast as he earned it. He had huge sums of money in the house to avoid the IRS. He loaned money to so called friends who had no intensions of paying him the money back. He met a young black actress called Bianca Lawson at a party held by Jack Nicholson who was renowned for holding expensive parties. Bianca fell for the new light heavyweight champion of the world and six months later they were married. Because of work commitments Bianca was away filming at MGM studios and it was then that Hector began to sleep with other women. They were all queuing up; pop stars, actresses, and daughters of some of the richest men in America all shared his bed.’ It didn’t take long before Hector was snorting coke.’ It was given out freely at the parties he went to and at first he refused until one of the singers from the group “the three degrees” tempted him saying that sex was fantastic using it.’

Before long Hector was a regular user. He reckoned that a few lines wouldn’t do him any harm.

When Bianca found him in their bed with another woman and stoned she moved out and filed for divorce. Hector tried to patch things up with her but Bianca had seen it before. She had lost her brother to drugs when he started shooting heroin after the high of the coke wasn’t sufficient.

She was not about to embark on another journey where her husband got high every night.

Luckily for hector that they had signed a prenuptial agreement. He paid her $6 million dollars and kept the mansion.

He was worth over $100 million. Plus he was still making money from endorsements, advertising deals and TV interviews.
