The training began for Michael’s forth coming world title fight against Hector Fernandez.

Michael was running three miles to begin with until his fitness levels improved he had twelve weeks in which to get himself in tip top shape. The plan was to go over to America six weeks before the fight and get some top class sparring partners. Paul Tucker Grant was going over with Michael as he was on the bill too against Gerry “White Lightning” Wilmot from Philadelphia. It would be Paul’s biggest payday yet with him getting somewhere in the region of $90.000 dollars.  It was a dip in the ocean compared with the money that Michael was getting but his time would come. He was only twenty three and had time on his hands. The newspapers were all saying that it was sending a lamb to the slaughter as Wilmot’s record was very impressive with thirty five wins and two draws to his credit. Eleven by way of knockout.’

The Sun Newspaper column written by Colin Hart was the only one who had given him a chance of winning if he could get to him early as his record showed that it took him two or three rounds to get going. Pauls plan was to pressure him from the opening bell and hopefully catch him off guard and land some telling shots before Wilmot could build up a rhythm.

Michael ran from his house then down to the coast, running along Tynemouth Long Sands up and down the small dunes he ran back and forth building up a steady pace. He shadow boxed as he ran throwing jabs and then hooks. Dave Ritson ran alongside him urging him on. The sweat began to soak the grey and blue Lonsdale tracksuit. There was only then on the beach at five in the morning dawn had not long broken and the gulls were in fine voice as the squealed high above. Two black crows hopped about eating discarded fish and chips in cardboard boxes. Why people couldn’t walk twenty yards and put their rubbish into the waste bins really annoyed Michael. At the top of the bank Dave got onto his bike that he’d used to cycle down from Forest hall where he lived. It was not a modern bike by any manner of means, in fact it was ancient so he wasn’t bothered if it got stolen.

The old Raleigh had six gears, it was good enough to get him from A to B that’s all that counted.’

Rick peddled behind Michael telling him to keep going as they ran along the coast and down onto North shields fish quay where he would run up the library stairs a few times and on the last time he would have Dave’s bike to carry up on his back before running on through Shields then on to Howdon and finally to his house.

“See you tonight Dave said as he cycled home.

Michael went straight upstairs to the shower when he got in. Standing under the water he washed the sweat from his body. The tracksuit that was now soaked had to be put straight into the washing machine. Evelyn came into the bathroom as he was drying himself.

Good run was it?’

“Just a quick one today love.’

“Well you don’t want to peak to early do you.’

“No, I just hope that there are no injuries like last time.’

“Yes that was bloody hard lines last time when the bloke you fought got cut.’

“Part and parcel of the fight game Eve, it could easily happen to me.’
