“Hello Norman, the usual?’

 “Yes please Alf.’

“Alf took down a tankard and filled it with a local ale called Rams bottom black. Norman had changed into some grey slacks and brown brogues he had a white shirt with a tie with a crest on it. His tweed jacket finished off his attire.

His wife who he introduced as Audrey looked younger than Norman by at least five years. Harry reckoned she was thirty six. She wore a nice grey coloured blouse and a black skirt. Her heels were two inches and she was well tanned. Her auburn coloured hair was nicely styled. She wore a simple string of pearls around her neck and pearl earrings. They looked fairly old, thought Susan possibly an heirloom perhaps. Would you care to join us Audrey said Susan.’

“That is so kind of you said Audrey who spoke impeccable English.’

“My wife and I have not long been married said Norman; I met her two years after my first wife Hannah died. She was very ill with gran mall asthma and died as a result of it. Audrey comes from Kent. We met whilst I was on holiday. The first holiday in many years, we seemed to hit it off right away didn’t we dear?’

“Yes darling, it was love at first sight as they say.’

“This is Susan Hedley my girlfriend, we haven’t been together very long either, in fact this is only our second date; I’m Harry Owen.

How did you both meet asked Audrey?’

I was fitting a new kitchen for Susan’s parents when she kindly offered me a drink. The next night we were having dinner in her father’s restaurant.’

“So do you work for a kitchen fitter Harold said Audrey?’

“No, it’s my own business. Not one to miss an opportunity Harry gave her his business card.

So Kitchen Craft belongs to you.’ Well I have a partner who I met one night on the Tuxedo Junction. It’s a floating night club in Newcastle. I was set up on a blind date but it was obvious that we were not going to be lovers. She was studying for her business degree you see and she takes care of the financial side of things.’

“Oh how quaint.’ What about you Susan what do you do for a living?

“I help my father in the restaurant.’

“Is business good where you are?’

“Yes it is very busy, we do about five hundred covers in a day.’

“So do you serve the customers?’

“I just do what I’m told mostly Audrey, I do the baking, or I work behind the bar. Whatever is needed really?’ “Can I ask you what you do?’

“I’m in the fashion business you may have heard of my company.’

“It’s called La Vita Notturna.’ (The Night Life)
