They walked to the gate and waited until it was opened and then showed their boarding passes. David let Alex have the window seat then Cassie sat in the middle as David stowed away his hand luggage. Then opened the times newspaper to read the news as the safety procedures were being carried out. He knew them back to front and sideways too after travelling to London and around the world on long haul flights.

David was pleased when the plane began to move and then taxi up the runway before turning and waiting for clearance. Apart from the helicopter ride to the hospital Alex had never flown in an aircraft before. Once the clearance was given the plane began to move and Alex grabbed Cassie’s hand and held on. The plane picked up speed and then the thrusters on the jet lifted the plane off the tarmac and into the air. The plane circled the airport then started to climb.

At 30.000 feet the captain welcomed them aboard and told them the approximate time that they would arrive in Newcastle Airport. The air stewards began serving drinks and selling duty free goods from the small catalogue which was held in the compartment of the seat in front.  Alex released his hand now from Cassies and settled back to enjoy the flight. He looked out of the window but all he saw was clouds. Then as darkness fell his eyes became heavy. He closed his eyes and was soon asleep.

“The excitement of today has made him tired said Cassie.’

“I bet he never slept a wink last night on that sofa.’

“I know,’ we should have gone to a hotel and not allowed Alex to sleep there.’

“Rodrique was insistent that we stay the night.’

“Would you like coffee or anything?’

“No thank you, I cannot suffer being like contortionist in those toilets.’

“They will be serving the food soon.’

“Food said David laughing; well Alex can have mine,

“Mine too said Cassie.’

The sound of young lads who had obviously had a lot to drink could be heard further down the plane. They were from Wales and were in fine voice as they sang “Land of our Fathers” in perfect harmony which brought a round of applause from everyone when they’d finished.

“By the way I rang a friend from the immigration office I know and a visa will be waiting to be picked up at the airport when we arrive.

“You don’t waste time do you?’

“Well we don’t want any complications do we?’

“I guess not.’

Alex was still asleep when the food came around so they just let him sleep on.

He shouldn’t suffer the indignity of eating aircraft food.’

“He shouldn’t be hungry anyway David after eating all that pizza.’

“Yes,’ and nearly all the tapas as well.’
