“Once you qualify which is in five years’ time. You will be a trainee doctor I will get you a job where I work where you can do your training. I will teach you how to drive and get you a licence.’

“I will also help you to buy your own home once you get a full time post.’

“Now what do you say?’

“David looked at Alex who had tears in his eyes.’ He said “I can drive Doctor David, I drive my father’s truck.’

“Look Alex we don’t have a lot of time so you have to make a decision. You must leave with us tomorrow because our flights are at eleven o’clock tomorrow evening. We have to be at Faro airport at 9 o’clock to check in. Just fill one case with a few things. Don’t worry, I will buy you new clothes once you are in England.’ I know it will mean leaving your mother and father but I’m sure that they want what’s best for you. It would be an impossible task to ask your father to pay for your tuition here in Portugal.’ No disrespect but your father does not earn enough that you could go onto university to study Cardiology. It takes five years of hard work before you can qualify as a doctor.’

“One day Alex, you can bring your parent’s to live in England and your father can open his own restaurant there.’

“You are right Doctor David; I would have to work very hard and with very little sleep to earn enough money to pay my tuition fees just to go to college.’

“I have decided Doctor David. I will come with you and Cassie to England.’

“Good lad, now let’s go back and tell your mother and father.’

“When they returned David explained to Cassie what his intensions were.’

“We might have to tell a few porkies to immigration until I can get Alex a visa but I’m sure we can get around that. I have some friends who can sort it out for me.’

“Why do you want to do this David?’

“Because Alex deserves a chance in life otherwise he will just be another statistic in the system.’

“You are a saint do you know that?’

“Steady on I wouldn’t go that far.’

It was David who broke the news to Alexio’s parents over dinner. David thought that his father would tell him to get out of his home and leave their son alone. But Rodrique embraced and thanked his friend.

“I will never forget what you are doing for my son. I know he will be far away from us but he knows that we love him and only want what is best for him.’ Going to England will be the making of him.’ “There he will have a great future.’

David explained that he would have to leave with them in the morning very early so they could sail back to Lisbon then drive to Albufeira.’

The meal that Rod had cooked was everything that David had said it would be and more. There was salad dishes, soup, Seafood platters, a variety of meat and rice dishes all cooked with with exotic vegetables. And fruits and desserts. Cassie was amazed at how good Rodrique’s food was and how expertly that it was presented and all done in less than two hours.’
