They talked long into the night and when it came to bed time Albert made his way to his room.’

“Where are you going asked Laura?’

“I thought with Bobby being home you’d let me back into my own bed.’

“Whatever for; no I don’t want you in my bed Albert I’m not ready for that.’

Albert went to the bathroom then into the spare room where he’d been sleeping since the death of her father. He got into bed then turned out the light.

“It hadn’t gone unnoticed by Bobby as he sat reading a chapter of Howard’s End.’

The next morning after breakfast Bobby headed back to Sunderland University. He asked his mother if everything was alright between his father and her to which she replied. “I just need time to grieve son.’ I have put you up a packed lunch and there’s some drinks in a carton that you can take with you.’

“Will you be back for dinner?’

I don’t know mother, I will give you a ring, and me and the boys may want go out tonight.’

“Be careful won’t you, I mean I know what students get up to with drinking and drug taking.’

“I will be careful mother I promise.’ Bobby kissed his mother on the cheek then went to his car.

“Time you cleaned that car it’s filthy.’

“I’ll clean it later mother I promise.’ Bobby honked the horn then drove away. She put the kettle back on again knowing that her husband would be up for work any minute. She made him two sandwiches with ham and pea’s pudding then wrapped them in foil and placed them into a Tupperware box she added a Kit Kat chocolate biscuit then made him a flask of tea. He never said anything about last night. Instead he grabbed a piece of toast and a cup of tea before kissing Laura on the cheek and rushing out to his car. He now had a burgundy coloured Honda sports car it was only six months old and it was his pride and joy. It was polished to a high shine. After keeping the Volvo that her father gave her for nearly ten years. Laura traded hers in for a Hyundai sports car. She was on very good money at Marks and Spencer’s and was now a manager. Mr Thorn had left and she was given the position after applying. Mr Thorn had recommended her for the job.

She was now in charge of the perfumery department and had to oversee the running of it. She had eight staff to look after and she ran it like clockwork. Every detail was adhered to. She checked every order to make sure that it was correct and accounted for every bottle of perfume sold.

Like her former boss the girls on the perfumery had to be tall and well turned out. She was meticulous. Checking nails, hair, body odour and make up every day. Those not up to scratch were quickly got rid of and another would take their place. Once a girl got married, if she got pregnant then her job was terminated and they were either moved to a different department or left altogether. Laura was on the shop floor one hour before any of the staff came in and the girls had to line up for inspection at 7.45pm promptly.

She was very strict about the breaks that the staff took and they could only drink water unless they used a toothbrush afterwards. They were weighed once a week to ensure that they didn’t gain over five pounds in weight.
