Gene Tunney for the heavyweight championship of the world. It was the first million dollar gate then which was a phenomenal amount of money in those days.

Evelyn was not happy about the split in the purse money and said if Michael didn’t get $7 million dollars then the fight was off. Norman explained that if Michael accepted this offer once he won the title he could then command how much money he wanted until then he would have to just take what he was being offered which wasn’t a bad considering he’d never had that much money before.

“After tax Michael stands to gain at least £2.5 million pounds then there was money to be made from TV broadcasting.’

“Alright then you can take the short fall; you can take ten per cent instead of fifteen.’

“No, I won’t do it.’

“Fair enough but Michael’s contract is up for renewal soon and if you want to keep him then you’d better settle for ten percent of something rather than nothing.

“Are you threatening me Evelyn?’

“No, what I am saying is that Michael has had offers from Don King, Terry Lawless, and Frank Warren to sign a new contract where they will take only ten per cent of his earnings.’

“What happened to Loyalty?’

“There’s no sentiment in business Norman you know that, so what is it to be?’ Ten per cent of future earning or nothing.’ “None of your other fighters have the earning potential that Michael has.’

“Norman thought long and hard for a moment, he rubbed his chin as he contemplated a decision then nodded. “I will get a new contract drawn up for you to look at.’ This is the last mind you Evelyn; I am not busting my gut trying to secure fights for any less.’

“I think that is fair said Evelyn as she left Norman Fawcett’s office feeling much better now her husband would get at least £3 million pounds after tax for fighting Hector Fernandez. This would secure their lives forever.’

The money Michael made from his last two fights had set up his father in law in his own roofing business with a van. Les McCauley his former work mate came to work with him because Willie Owen was offering him better pay. Willick had a Shop on Shields Road in Byker that sold everything in the building trade and Michael soon made a lot of potential customers. Willick employed his son Alan to run the shop and it was going well. Michael gave Harry enough money to start his own kitchen fitting business as well. Emma Noble found a shop across the road from the new Warner Cinema. It was a perfect location where people either walking to or from the cinema could see the range of kitchens, bench tops, and units on offer in a variety of colours. Harry took on his friend Bob to do the cutting out on the router and to help him fit the units. “Kitchen Craft” soon became an established business. Next Michael bought the council house that his parents were living in because they refused to move from Tynemouth Road where they had lived all their lives. They bought a house near St Mary’s light house. They got a bargain; there was very little to do in the house. Michael fitted it all out with new furniture and Harry built them a new kitchen with marble bench tops. The double oven had eight gas rings. There was a separate dining room. The bathroom was fully modern. The gardens front and rear had been well cared for. Michael paid a retired gardener to come in and take care of both back and front.  There was enough land to grow crops and fruit. It had a large green house that stretched all the way down the garden that was an acre long and over
