The crowd was screaming now for Michael to finish it as Harry Gibbs took up the count. He got to the count of six when Francis got to his feet. Gibbs gave Francis every chance to recover wiping his gloves on his shirt and giving him a long hard look before waving Michael back in.’

Michael didn’t rush he knew that he had over a minute of the round in which to do it. A feint to the body a left hook to the jaw and a crunching right sent Francis down again. He tried to regain his feet but they would not obey him. He stumbled across the ring and fell again. Harry Gibbs called a halt. The fight was over and Michael was the new British light heavyweight Champion. Tommy Williamson,’ the official entered the ring. He took the microphone and gave the official verdict. The time of 2 minutes an eleven seconds of the first round was recorded and Francis had failed to beat the count. It was the fastest knock out in a British light heavyweight title fight.

Harry Carpenter who was the commentator for the BBC interviewed Michael shortly after the Lonsdale belt was placed around his waist.

“Congratulations Michael it what turned out to be an astonishing win for you tonight. “Did you expect the fight to end as quickly as it did Michael?’

“No not at all. I mean… I had trained to go the full fifteen rounds.’

“You looked in fantastic shape tonight, what are your plans now? Will you hope to get a shot at the European title now? I would think that you are the number one contender.

“Yes,’ I trained hard for this one and I will train even harder for the next.’ Norman Fawcett my manager will be trying to secure a fight between me and Carlos Mendoza from Spain.’

“Can we bring in Norman Fawcett?’

Norman walked in front of the cameras as Harry asked him what his plans were now that Michael had won the British title.’

“Well Michael will take a little break now then hopefully we will defend the title.’

“What about a fight with Carlos Mendoza?’

“If we can get Mendoza to defend his European title that is the fight we want and I’m sure that is what the fans would like to see too. Mendoza has a good record with only one defeat on his record. He has never been stopped or knocked out in 31 fights. He is strong and a very durable fighter.’

“Mickey is unbeaten now in 17 fights he’s got fifteen knockouts to his credit what makes you think that Mendoza will fight Michael rather than take on say Ivan Stevenson from Sweden?’

“Stevenson isn’t an exciting fighter like Mickey. He is a bigger draw and would sell more tickets.

“Well let’s hope that that you can get this European title fight as I’m sure the BBC would love to cover it.’ If not we will see Michael defend his title against Ronnie Hayes from Romford in Essex?’

“Well we wish you luck and we hope to see Michael in the ring again soon.’

“Thanks Harry.’

They brought in Danny Francis who shook hands with the newly crowned champion.’

“What happened tonight Danny were you not properly prepared in there tonight?
