Michael drove Evelyn home before driving home himself.

Over the next few weeks Michael was more than half way through his preparation. Each morning he ran his obligatory five miles with sprints every 200 hundred yards. He also used the Moving staircase in Jarrow as a training ground where he ran through the pedestrian tunnel then sprinted up the stairs then down the other side and back. After twenty times his thighs were burning but he pushed on and ran home. At the gym he pounded the heavy bags then used the spring ball, speed ball. And pad work to sharpen his skills. Video tapes of Danny Francis was studied so that they knew the opponents strengths and weaknesses. They discovered a flaw in Francis’ style whereby he dropped his hands after moving out of an attacking position. They had sparring partners who Michael worked with who purposely dropped their guard when moving out of attack. Michael was able to pounce throwing a left hook and a right cross. The medicine ball was pounded off his stomach as he did countless floor exercises and weight training. His diet was stepped up to reduce the amount of carbohydrates that he was consuming. He ate high carb meals before training to burn them off as energy but ate high protein and fibre after his workouts. He drank copious amounts of unsweetened orange juice and about four litres of water. Sparring intensified after nine weeks and Michael was looking good. Then came the bad news. Francis has sustained a cut eye during a spar session and the fight was postponed for six weeks to allow the cut to heal. Danny Francis had to have six stitches inserted into the cut. The Clements team now knew if that if they could get Francis into the ring Michael could beat him. Psychologically Francis would be worrying if the cut would open again. The training eased off to allow Michael to just keep ticking over until the last three weeks when it was then stepped up again. It brought him to the very peak of his fitness and endurance. The team knew that Michael could go the fifteen rounds if necessary. The fight was rescheduled for January 5th and when Michael came to the ring he was totally overwhelmed at how many people were cheering his name as he stepped into the ring. He looked around and saw his parents who were sitting with Evelyn and her father and two sons. Francis kept his man waiting for over ten minutes before making his way to the ring.  Once inside Andy Buchan smeared Vaseline over the left eye of Francis to help the punches slip off. Harry Gibbs called the two fighters together and gave them final instructions after all the announcements had been made. Michael went back to his corner. He looked focussed as the bell sounded. Francis shuffled to the centre of the ring then flicked out two jabs Michael just moved his head from side to side and the jabs missed, he quickly followed up with two jabs of his own and both connected straight away the left eye of Francis began to redden and he put up his glove trying to protect it. Michael followed up with a left to the body and Francis was forced to retreat unto the ropes. He grabbed hold of Michael in a clinch until Harry Gibbs separated the two men and Michael got straight back into his man with another body shot and a right cross that bounced high up on the head of Francis. Urged on by his corner Francis went on the attack he caught Michael on the jaw with a left cross. Michael covered up then moved out of range Francis was experienced enough to try and cut the ring space that Michael had; he feinted with a double jab then threw the right; Clément’s saw it and moved his head Francis backed off and it was then that Michael threw a left hook and right hand like they had practiced in sparring. They were solid punches and Danny Francis felt them. He got onto his toes and moved away but Michael knew that he’d hurt his man he pursued Francis and caught him with a solid jab a right followed by a left hook. Blood started trickling down the face of Francis as the scar tissue over his left eye gave way. Francis tried to cover up but Michael seeing the cut burst open went after his man with lefts and rights. The crowd were cheering as Michael got his man into a corner and measured his man with the left then threw a vicious right. It connected on Francis’ jaw and his legs buckled another right then a left hook went in and Francis was down.
