“Don’t you think that you are being exploited Michael I mean If you advertised for say one of the big supermarkets they would pay you vast sums of money. Once I’m Champion of the world Evelyn the offers of endorsements will roll in. big sports companies like Nike and adidas will be offering mega bucks for me to advertise their sportswear. I won’t have to buy a new car – Jaguar or some other car maker will give me one as long as they can use my name to advertise. I will make at least a million pounds from advertising Evelyn. That will set us up for when I retire.’

“When do you plan to retire?’

“Well I’m twenty five now, maybe ten years from now, who knows. As long as I don’t get hurt and look after myself I could fight until I’m at least thirty eight.’

“I think that once you win the world title just carry on until you lose.’ Once that happens you will know it’s time to quit.’ It’s the ones who carry on after that who end up punchy. In their minds they still believe that they can turn back time and regain what they fought so hard to get.’ “Pride is cruel master Michael.’

“Let’s not talk of retirement yet I’ve a fight for the British title in less than four weeks. I have to get past Danny Francis on November 5th.

“Bonfire night.’

“Yes it’s going to be a right cracker at Wembley Arena.’

“There’s certainly going to be fireworks in that ring.’

Michael smiled as he went to pay the bill Evelyn got up from her seat to see Michael getting his photo taken with the manager of pizza hut who had recognised him and gave him the meal on the house. He signed a few autographs from customers before leaving the restaurant.

“See what I mean, before long I will be recognised everywhere I go.’

Michael walked to his car and got in after letting Evelyn in.’

“Do you not hate all the people crowding around you like that?’

“Listen Eve, if I can bring a little joy into someone’s life by signing my name on a slip of paper then so be it. It costs nothing.’

Just wait until the press start bothering you Michael you will wish that you could just escape.’

“I am just going to enjoy my bit of fame while it lasts Eve.’ I won’t be champ forever so I want to make the most of it. Listen to me being presumptuous; I haven’t even won the titles yet. I have four hard fights to face.’

“I have no doubts in my mind that you cannot win that world title from Hector Fernandez.’

“Boxing politics is strange Eve. You just don’t become an automatic challenger for a title.’ There’s a lot of deals done behind the scene.’

The champion isn’t going to get in the ring with me if he thinks he’s going to lose. People know that I can bang with either hand. They will want an awful lot of money for them to defend it against me.

That’s why I’m taking the lower end of this purse against Francis.

“But the rewards are stacked in my favour if I win. Bigger purses will come my way for certain.’
