“Leslie did you say.’

By now the two lads face began to change colour and they turned off the radio.’

“You are Mr George Leslie aren’t you?’

No; I’m Eric Bannen.’

Les and Willie looked at one another knowing that they’d cocked up.

“Shit they both exclaimed.’

So where does George Leslie live.’

“That daft bugger lives at number thirty three.’

“Do you know him?’

“Know him, I served under him, he’s as mad as a box of frogs.’ He nearly got us all killed in Egypt.’

“We are going to have to replace this part of the roof as well because we’ve stripped it now.’

“Well don’t expect payment from me because it’s your fault.’

“Aye alright.’

“Les rubbed his chin and said, how we going to explain this to Jimmy.’

“It was his bloody hieroglyphics that we couldn’t read.’

“I think I’ve got a couple of rolls of felt in my shed said Les.’

“Did you nick that from the factory roof we did on Norham Road in North Shields?’

“Aye I ordered more than what we needed so it went into my shed. I was going to ask you to help me do my garage roof.’

“Bloody good job you kept it then isn’t it.’

“Aye, but it means I’m going to have to go and get it so we can do sergeant Bilko’s garage.’

“Look you go and get the rolls of stuff and I’ll finish off here whilst you are gone.’

“Les climbed down the ladder just as the gas men showed up to fix the boiler.’

You would have saved us a job if you’d come on time said Les as he walked past the two young lads.

“Les got into the van and drove away.

It was eleven thirty when Willie had finished. He brought everything down from the roof and cleaned up. He then placed all of the gear on the foot path then went and knocked on Eric Bannen’s front door.

When he came out Willie had to apologise. He told the old man that he now had a garage roof that would out live him for nothing.’ Les arrived shortly after and they dumped the stuff into the back of the van then headed off to sergeant Bilko’s house.
