“No.’ Albert they ruin your teeth.’

“What about an ice cream then.’

No.’ they’ll only make me fat.’

I have a high profile job where I’m in the public eye. My boss Mr Thorn keeps a close eye on all the girls. He told me that they cannot have fat girls selling perfume.’ They must look like models and not slouch.’ Laura had been there only a week and already she was changing. The other two girls she worked with were from well to do families and bragged constantly about their foreign holidays and how much daddy had spent on them. Laura had again told lies to the girls to make them think she was well to do also. By the end of the week she had even convinced herself that she was from an upper-class background. She sat with them in the cafeteria as they ate nothing but cucumber sandwiches and drank water not coffee or tea so that they would not discolour their teeth. They were tall and elegant with bouffant hairstyles painted long nails and wore real pearls around their necks and expensive jewellery. They dated very rich men who bought them the best. Laura watched as they had the men drooling over them and the power that they commanded. They were supremely confident. Laura found herself copying the way they walked. Upright and smooth like a pair giraffe’s they walked around. They never hurried anywhere. Men would sit and look at them as their legs and hips had a mind of their own. They spoke without moving their top lip in perfect Queens English.

They found themselves being invited to parties and the theatre a lot. This was something Laura wanted to experience. When the movies were over Albert got up and waited at the end of the row until Laura walked slowly and elegantly to the exit.’

“Would you be so kind and get my coat please Albert.’

Yes of course Laura.’

She turned and watched as Albert near broke his neck to get to her coat and his own. She had Albert in the palm of her hand and he would do anything she wanted him too.’

“Albert she said as they stood outside.’

 “Yes Laura, what is it?’

“I think we ought to get a taxi home don’t you, I mean if you cannot afford one then it is alright.’ Most men have cars these days you know.’

“I’m hoping to get a car of my own soon Laura.’

“What some second hand banger?’ I won’t be seen dead in some clapped out piece of junk.’

“No,’ I’m buying myself the latest model.’ I’ll be able to pick you up from work in it.’

“That sounds good Albert; when are you planning on buying it?’

“Well, I’ve got savings and I hope…

“When Albert; I don’t want to be getting the bus home every night do I.’ I want my boyfriend to look the part when I introduce you to my friends.’

“I will see about it tomorrow alright Laura.’ Good because when you meet my mother and father I want you wearing your best clothes not the old tat that you’re wearing tonight. Albert smiled embarrassingly then told her he was going to buy himself a new wardrobe as well.
