If we feed him so soon he will come to expect it and we will be making bottles and changing him all day and night.’

“We have to start as we mean to go on.’

“Turn on the TV.’

“I want Bobby to get used to sounds, my mother said that she could hoover and do all the washing and I never woke up once.’

Albert switched on the TV set which was now in colour and far better than the old black and white model that they had. Albert could now watch match of the day in brilliant colour.

Bobby’s attention turned to the screen and the colours as an episode of the Flintstones came on.

Albert was about to turn it over when Laura told him to leave it on as Bobby was watching it.

“The news is on in a minute.’

“You can watch the news at nine o’clock,’ Bobby likes this look, at him he cannot keep his eyes off the screen. Albert relented and let the new baby watch the programme. At five o’clock Albert made up another bottle so that Laura could feed the baby. Laura read through the books she had been given by Patricia Allen which gave information about winding the new baby after feeding. The diagrams were self -explanatory. Once fed and winded Laura put Bobby back on the floor and asked Albert to watch him whilst she started making the tea. Albert took Bobby into his bedroom and his eyes looked around at the Walt Disney pictures on the wall paper. He held onto Bobby with one hand as he lifted his high chair into the living room then sat him in front of the television with his rattle which he proceeded to bang on the Plastic table top. Laura came through and started to sing a familiar nursery rhyme. It says in the book that we can start feeding Bobby on solid food after six months so the sooner we get him weaned off bottles the better. I will try him with some mashed carrots and banana tomorrow. Every time a jingle was played on the TV Bobby would pick up the rattle and join in. when dinner was ready Laura asked Albert to bring Bobby into the kitchen so he could sit alongside them and watch them eat. Instinctively the baby reached out with his hands as Laura ate her meal. When they had finished it was time to put Bobby to bed in his cot. Laura checked his nappy before lying him down and reading him a story whilst Albert sat in the chair.  Bobby seemed to enjoy “Henry the hedgehog” and Peter the Potbellied Pig. Especially when Laura made grunting and oinking noises.

“Goodnight Bobby they both whispered then closed the door after winding up the mobile over his cot. The animals went round and round and it wasn’t long after that Bobby fell asleep.

At twenty minutes to four in the morning Albert, who was a light sleeper was alerted to the sound of a baby crying. He immediately woke Laura up who rushed to the cot. Bobby had woken up and needed changing. Albert who was in his pyjamas that Laura had bought him went to boil a kettle to make up a bottle and to use the rest to be placed into a dish so the Laura could wash and change the baby. After Bobby was changed Laura fed him his formula then lay him back in his cot after winding him. It was now just after four in the morning. Albert made a cup of tea for himself because Laura had gone back to bed leaving Albert to clean up. He quietly placed everything back and disposed of the dirty nappy. He thought that he would have to buy another pack of nappies because at the rate Bobby was filling them they would run out before too long. After he was satisfied that Bobby had gone back off to sleep happily sucking on his dummy, Albert went back to bed. They would have to
