Against better judgement

Kara-Lynne lives in New York City as a writer for People Magazine. Fresh out of college, writing for People has never been the job of her dreams. She's hardly given thought-provoking assignments and when Kara's given the task to publish a story on popular, pretty-boy and charming 'love expert' Ryan Barre, she expects it to be a simple assignment. However, she realises very quickly that things are far from simple with Ryan.

13. Time for a Kit Kat

Mild claustrophobia would have consumed Kara if Ryan hadn't been there, distracting her from the proximity of warm bodies around her. She was glad that her attire didn't restrict her from any movement and provided sufficient breathe-ability to be comfortable in a dense environment. The invigorating music blaring from the speakers made it almost impossible to talk with Ryan without shouting and potentially waking up with a sore throat the next day so Kara wisely opted to release her energy by dancing. She wasn't brilliant at it but she didn't give much thought to what she looked like.

Ryan was thoroughly enjoying himself. Since their last face-to-face encounter, Ryan was chuffed that Kara seemed to be comfortable around him.

"You alright?" He lowered his lips to her ear, preferring the proximity to straining his voice.

She moved her hand from her chest to push her hair behind her ear. "I'm fine although I might wanna go back for a drink in a while." She glanced over her shoulder to where Will was seated, engrossed in his phone.

When she turned her attention to Ryan, he met her with a wink and gently took her hands to twirl her around since a couple had decided to return to the bar. Her melodic laughter brought a smile to his lips and feeling brave, he pulled her into his arms and dipped her. The music wasn't exactly appropriate for such a move but she didn't seem to mind. Once she was upright again, she fanned herself with her hands, a pleasant pink spread across her cheeks.

"Impressive," she remarked.

He shrugged, flashing a smile."Time for a rest, madam?"

He offered his arm which she took. "I do think so, good sir."

Will looked up from his screen when he heard laughter. The pair sat down and drank deeply. He shoved his phone into his back pocket, offering a small smile.

Kara's eyes met his. "Everything alright?"

His shoulders shot up straight. "Yeah, yeah," he placed a hand on his knee and reached out for his drink. "So," he began after wetting his throat, "how are things with you and Sam?"

Ryan's eyes drifted to the rim of his drink.

She shrugged. "It's fine. We've only been on a couple dates and he's really sweet."

"But?" Ryan leaned in, clearly curious.

"I don't know if he has what I want. At least, I haven't seen enough for me to make a decision," she explained. "But there's no rush."

"Oh? You aren't concerned about the whole biological clock issue?"

Will sat up straight, eager to hear her reply to Ryan's inquiry.

Kara raised an eyebrow. "Not enough to worry about it. I'd rather take my time to decide than go for someone out of fear that I won't find anyone else. Or else I'd make a rash decision that I might come to regret."

"I'd say love isn't rational but it's your future. So, what exactly are you looking for?"

"That's none of your business," Kara quipped.

Will chuckled, entertained by her snarkiness. "Dare I say whoever catches your fancy would have quite a time wooing you."

"Every lady is entitled to some wooing."

"Can't deny that. What if you meet the right person but at the wrong time?"

Kara pursed her lips, her eyebrows furrowed in deep thought. She looked up to meet Will's inquisitive eyes. "It's hard to say. I think that sometimes we want someone or something to happen so badly that we get impatient. But if it's the right person, some argue there could never be the wrong time. Yet, sometimes an epiphany is required."

How articulate.

"Will, perhaps we should develop that concept for one of our next videos," Ryan suggested, already buzzing with anticipation, "but Kara should be in it to share her perspective."

His friend and colleague nodded, attracted by the idea.
