3. Sorting For a Lone Sixth Year

I followed the crowd of students through the station and off towards a line of carriages. "First years," a huge man yelled from the side. "First years follow me!"

"That's Hagrid," Lily said over to me. "Great guy! This is the first year that he gets to take the first years over on the boats. Ogg finally let him do it alone," she finished and was smiling towards Hagrid. He noticed her and started waving with huge enthusiasm.

We continued to walk and finally we got to the carriages. We all climbed into a near by carriage which started to move on its own.

"So are you being sorted with the first years," Peter asked with a giggle. "Pretty embarrassing."

"Shove off it," Sirius replied quickly. "She'll probably be sorted like a normal student."

"Yeah who cares if she's older," Lily agreed.

"I think i'll be nervous but fine," I smiled meekly.

The rest of the carriage ride was full of conversation. Sirius was now talking about how to decorate their room which all the boys shared together. Lily on the other hand was roomed with two other girls she was friends with but the other had gone away and wasn't coming back for the rest of school.

"Maybe you'll be in Gryffindor and become my roomie," she smiled to me. "I can't wait for classes; I definitely want to take potions with Slughorn."

"I wonder what I'll be in," I spoke mostly to myself.

"Well," Remus started slowly. "You did say that your parents taught you everything and I'm sure Dumbledore knows that. So you'll probably be put into normal sixth year classes."

"That's true," I said lowly. Now I had to think about the types of classes I wanted to take! How difficult. "But aren't the classes you take supposed to be of what job you want to do."

"Usually," James said with a shrug.

I looked over at Remus who now had a sour expression; James and Peter seems unaffected. When I looked at Sirius he was already looking at me with a questioning expression. "What would you like to do after Hogwarts?"

"If we don't die by Voldemort's hands," James interjected smoothly.

I sat silently. My parents talked about Voldemort; a dark wizard who wanted nothing to do with muggles or half bloods. Mostly when they talked about him I was always out of the room or they spoke in hushed voices.

"So Rose," Lily said breaking the silence. "You never rode the boats up to the castle; since this is your first year."

"Sadly no but my parents told me all about it. How amazing the castle looks from the boats; all mysterious and such."

"It gets pretty tricky just so you know," James said then pulled his hand through his hair making it stick up in all ways.

"I've read Hogwarts: A History," I replied. "I know that the Great Hall's ceiling is bewitched to look like the sky and how the staircases move!"

"What about the secret passage ways," Peter pipped up. At that all the boys looks over with scowls on their faces.

"What secret passage ways," Lily asked with a eyebrow up. "Huh Pete?"

"He's just talking nonsense," Sirius interjected. "You know how wormtail can be," Sirius said as he glared at Peter. "Full of nothing in his head."

"Oh," Peter's voice came out shakey, "h-he's right. I think it was a dream."

"What are those nicknames that you guys use," I asked quickly trying to change the subject.

"Oh well we're the Marauders," James said buffing his chest out a bit. "That's what we call ourselves anyways. I'm prongs."

"Moony," Remus said with a raised hand with he dropped rather quickly.

"Wormtail," squeaked Peter.

"And I'm Padfoot," Sirius said as proudly as James did. His grey eyes were lively and he looked like he was having fun.

"That's their little gang," Lily said with a roll of her eyes. "If you ask me; they could just call each other by their regular names."

"But don't you call James, Potter anyways," Peter asked.

All the boys seemed to burst with laughter. "He got you Evans," James laughed.

"You have to admit it," Sirius added.

"Oh hush," Lily said with a scowl. "I'm going to the Great Hall, if any of you want to join! Come along Rose," she pulled me out of the now stopped carriage.

"Why do you call him Potter," I asked delicately.

"Because Potter is a pompous, arrogant bully," she huffed. Her arm was tangled around mine but I didn't mind it. This was the first time I had a girl that was a friend.

"He's a bully," I asked lightly as we entered the castle. We were surrounded by students who were also making their way towards the great hall.

"Yes to a lot of younger people," she replied. Her mood lighten up a bit but she still seemed angry. "He's very talented; high marks in most his classes. But he just picks on everyone who isn't as good as he is."

"Well that does seem-,"

"Ms. Hathaway," a voice called from the side. I looked over to see a women. She was a severe looking women; quiet tall and she wore green robes. "This way."

"That's Professor McGonagall," she said to me. "She takes the first years to be sorted and you to then. Go on," Lily gave me a slight push.

"Get Gryffindor," I heard James yelled from over my shoulder. I turned to look and saw all the boys. They had huge smiles on their faces, "good luck!" "Don't take to long." "We'll save you a seat!"

I turned back towards the professor with a huge smile. Maybe Gryffindor wouldn't be to bad.

"I see you've made friends with troublemakers," she peered down at me through her glasses. "I do hope you take after Lily and Remus if you tend to be close with them," her mouth formed into a thin line. "Come along then."

She began walking a different way; she opened a door just off the first floor corridor. "We thought it might be a bit better for you to be sorted alone."

I walked into the room behind her which seemed to turn out to be her office. "Sir please," the professor asked and so I did.

"Now this is the sorting hat," she said picking an old hat off of her desk. "I will place is upon your head and you will be sorted."

"Okay," I replied. Slowly she put the hat onto my head.

"Ahh," the hat spoke inside my head. "Hathaway is it. Very nice. Very nice. Your mother is a teacher now but sorted into Ravenclaw. Your father on the other hand was a Gryffindor. I see. I see." The hat laughed lightly. "I can see how much you strive to learn new things but brave you are. I can see that, yes. Fighting a sickness but coming all the way here just to learn and meet new people. My, my; how very interesting."

I was breathing deeply. Did I want to be in Ravenclaw or did I want to stay with the Marauders and Lily? Oh what did I want?

"So you know the Potter boy and his friends. Yes. Very charming young fellows but are they the right group for you? I might say Ravenclaw could bring you knowledge unheard of. A powerful witch you could become in Ravenclaw. But Gryffindor with your guts with definitely win a very charming witch. That much be it then," the hat waiting a second then yelled aloud "Gryffindor."

"Oh Merlin's Beard," Professor McGonagall smiled. "My house," she nodded and took the hat off my head. "Perfect. I'm the Head of House for Gryffindor. I am happy to happy you along! Come along then. Must get to the first year sorting now," we walked out of her office and down the hallway which we just come up. "You go sit at Gryffindor then," she patted my back as we entered the Great Hall. "On you go."

The Great Hall was massive. Four large tables were side by side with one long table at the front which had all the teachers there. I saw my mum and waved lightly as I walked forward.

She gave me hopeful eyes which I knew asked which house I was in, "Gryffindor," I mouthed.

"What," she mouthed back with a shrug.

I kept walked and finally saw the boys and Lily who were all sitting side by side.

I pointed at the Gryffindor table; my mum faces fell a little but she smiled at me and gave a reassuring nod.

"Gryffindor then," Lily asked with a smile. All the boys were waiting for my answer as was she. "So?"

"Yah, Gryffindor," I laughed lightly.

The group applauded and said their congratulations. "Here sit right here," Lily said scooting over for some space. I sat between her and Sirius.

"Go job," Sirius smiled down at me. "Now you can hang with us!"

"That sounds like fun," I really laughed this time. I finally had friends. I finally had a house! Da was going to be so proud. I have to write to him!

Oh this really is going to be the best year!
