5. First Day of Classes and a Visit to the Hospital Wing

Transfiguration was the first class of the day; we all shuffled out of the Great Hall and up the staircases. We finally arrived to the classroom where Professor McGonagall stood in front of the room.

"Take your seats," she yelled from the front.

Lily took my hand and dragged me about half way up the desk then sat down. Remus and Peter sat next to us as James and Sirius sat down behind us.

"So this year we are NEWT level which means we are moving onto bigger things," McGonagall waved her wand in the swish and flick motion but spoke no words still the feather on her desk floated into the air.

"We are going to be studying non-verbal spells! We shall try Wingardium Leviosa first because we all know it so well. Go on then." She waved her wand again and dozens of feather floated down the isle; two settling on each desk.

I pulled my wand from my pocket; an ten inch ebony wood; unicorn hair core. "Very pretty," Lily commented pulling out her own wand. "Mines ten and one forth inches. Willow and Unicorn hair core"

"Oh," I smiled at her. We began trying on the floating spell which was hard to do on the first time. Lily had it done within the first five times along with James who seemed to be showing off to her.

Remus on the other hand was writing down on a piece of parchment; "Moony," James said loudly which Remus wasn't expecting as he dropped his quill. "Sh*t!"

"WHO SAID THAT," McGonagall yelled and looked up from her desk.

"James," Remus said loudly. "How could you! Shame on you!"

"Detention Potter," McGonagall yelled then turned her head back to her paper.

"Ah-wha," James glared hard at Remus. I giggled lighted along with Lily and Sirius.

Wingardium Leviosa! I thought hard and moved my hand. Finally my feather began to float. "Yay," I cheered for myself.

"Well done Rose," I heard Sirius say from behind me.

I looked back and his feather was floating in the air seamlessly. "Oh um," he put his wand down abruptly; his feather fell slowly.

"Hmm," Remus muttered. I looked over and Remus was looking at Sirius with his eyebrow raised. "Never seen your magic falter before."

"Oh shove off," Sirius said then began a conversation with James about how to get Remus back for putting him in detention.

The rest of the period passed by quickly; I tried not to pay attention to Sirius's and James's conversation.

Why did his magic fail when I looked at him? Did he really not like me that much? I mean that doesn't make sense seeing how he complimented my magic earlier.

"Rose! Rose," Lily yelled.

I turned towards her quickly, "yeah?"

"It's time to go," she replied. Everyone was already packed and walking towards the door.

"Oh I must have been out of it," I replied and started to clean up my mess. Suddenly a sharp pain pierced my chest; I grabbed at my chest trying to control my breathing. My hand jerked and knocked down one of my books to the floor. They don't need to see my have a fit right now; I've just became friends with them.

"I'll stay with her," Sirius said picking up my book. "You all know I'm not very fond of charms anyways."

"Okay," they replied and set off.

My breaths were coming out harsh but I still tried to gather my things. I felt Sirius bend beside me and start gathering the book and putting them into my bag.

"Ms. Hathaway, Mr. Black," Professor McGonagall said walking up to us. "What is wrong?" She stood there standing in silence for a moment; Sirius sat quietly too probably because he didn't know why I wasn't moving.

"Your mother told me about your sickness," McGonagall said simply. "Mr. Black take her to the hospital wing."

"Of course," he said quickly. He picked up my bag and threw it over his shoulder then placed one hand on my waist and on my the bottom of my elbow.

"I can c-carry my own bag," I said through clenched teeth.

"Just lean on me," he said then started to walk. "Everyone will be in class by now," he said as the bell rang. "So don't be embarrassed."

"Well I'm sure plenty of girls would love to be in this position with you," I laughed then groaned in pain. "Oh no laughing."

Sirius chuckled then became serious all of the sudden, "Why are you sick anyways."

"I don't know for sure," I sighed with brought another shape pain to my chest. "We've been to St Mungos a bunch of times but they can only do spells for the pain when it happens. Can't stop it from happening."

"So are you dying or something," he asked. "Oh wow that sounded like git; just ignore that."

"Umm no you're fine," I smiled. "I don't think I'm dying soon but who knows really," I laughed lightly.

We arrived at the hospital wing where Madam Pomfrey was sitting in her small window covered office. She came out when she gave Sirius and I, "oh Ms. Hathaway your mother told me I should be seeing you a couple times a week."

"Yes Madam but I'm in some pain right now," I muttered as nicely as possible.

Sirius led me to a vacant bed and helped me sit down slowly. "You can go now," I said to Sirius who was watching me intensely like I might fall over dead at that moment. "Thank you for helping me."

"I'll just stay for a bit," he replied and sat in a nearby chair. "Like I said charms isn't my pot of tea," he shrugged and smiled.

"Here you go," Madam Pomfrey walked up to me with a small goblet. "Drink this and spell a bit."

"What is it," I asked suspiciously. Peering into the goblet I saw light blue liquid.

"Calming Draught," she said simply. "Your mother said give you this and you rest but if you don't feel better then go to St Mungo's."

I drank the liquid quickly and gave the goblet back to Madam Pomfrey who gave Sirius a glare before stalking off towards her office.

Sirius pulled the curtain around me as I climbed into the bed. I felt calmer as the drought was meant for by there was still a stabbing feeling in my chest. I looked back at Sirius and raise an eyebrow, "what did you do to make Madam Pomfrey hate you?"

"Oh that," Sirius said laughed. He jerked his head to one said and his hair seemed to float off to the side; his grey eyes shinning. "The guys and I come in here a lot and we're not the best guests. But I'll be on my best behavior since it's your first time in here."

"I've been in plenty of hospitals," I giggled lightly. "I could probably use some fun in here."

"I'll keep that in mind for next time," he winked at me. "But now go to sleep.

"Fine," I stuck my tongue out at him.

Slowly my eyelids began to grow heavy but I kept my eyes on Sirius until I couldn't anymore.

It felt like forever till I heard voices around me, "missed you at lunch mate," I heard James's voice say.

"I didn't want to leave her alone," I heard Sirius mutter quietly. "I guess she has to go to the hospital all the time; I didn't want her to be alone on her first time at Hogwarts."

"Sounds like you have a crush," Remus's voice was now speaking lightly. "Never seen that before," he laughed.

"There's just something about her," I heard him sigh. "She's just-I mean I can't explain it. She's just really brave; I mean she has to come in here because she is always sick but she told me to go. She's not worried about being alone and she's not worried about dying either. She's the total opposite of me."

"Wow mate," it was James's voice now. "You sound bonkers."

"Yeah like how James talks about Lily," Remus replied with a laugh.

"Hello boys," Lily's voice rang out. "How's Rose doing?"

"She's still sleeping," Peter replied.

I began to move a bit so they wouldn't know I heard their conversation. I opened my eyes slowly and saw everyone. Sirius was still in the chair that he was in earlier; Lily was sitting at the bottom of my bed and the rest of the boys were standing around me.
